Toms River has a total area of 52.9 square miles. Approximately 20% of the township is on a barrier peninsula and consists of Normandy Beach, Normandy Shores, Ocean Beaches 1,2 and 3, Chadwick Beach, Chadwick Island, Monterey Beach and Silver Beach and Ortley Beach. They are separated from the mainland by Barnegat Bay.
Originally, only the downtown area was referred to as Toms River while the rest of the township was called Dover Township. In November, 2006, residents voted to change the name from the Township of Dover to the Township of Toms River. The official date of the name change was November 14, 2006.
The Toms River Regional School district is the largest suburban school district in the state. The district also includes Beachwood, Pine Beach and South Toms River. We have 12 elementary schools, 3 intermediate schools and 3 high schools.
Ocean County's only Catholic High School, Monsignor Donovan, is also located in Toms River.
Ocean County College is located on Hooper Avenue in Toms River. This is a two-year college offering four-year options with other New Jersey universities and colleges.

Toms River also is home to the largest non-teaching hospital, Community Memorial Hospital.
The Toms River Branch of the Ocean County Library is located on Washington Street and is the largest public library in the county.
In the past few years the community has added the Ritacco Center which is used to host major concerts and events.
