How to Clean and Restain a Deck

After years of exposure to the elements, and deck can lose its luster, and start to look old and faded. Rain mostly causes this damage, but there is something you can do to restore that old wood, and make it look new a vibrant again. Of coarse at first it will need thoroughly cleaned, then restained. Simply follow the steps below to clean and restain your deck, and you will be amazed at how much better it will look.

1. Mix a 1 to 1 ratio of biodegradable wood cleaner in sprayer.

2. Wet the entire deck with a garded hose.

3. Next scrub the deck with a stiff bristled brush

4. Rinse the deck with clean water

5. In a bucket, pour one part borate and 5 parts of water, and mix well using a cordless drill fitted with a paint-mixing paddle.

6. Pour the borate solution into a sprayer, and apply to the wood to remove any algae

7. Let the wood dry for 2 or 3 days

8. Mix one gallon of oil based deck stain with half a pint of outdoor grade varnish

9. Apply 2 coats of stain with a sponge

10. At the begininning of the following spring apply another coat.

Todd, there are some new stain products out there that when applied actually "fill" the voids in the decks wood so you ave a much smoother surface. Makes your deck look and feel great.
