Yes, well.  Here I have been making friends and fans all along.

Not!

My last entry I'm Organic...Eat me!prompted two phone calls from Active Rain Morality Leaders.  I was told that my choice of title was "disgusting," and they were horrified that it was in THEIR group.

I pointed out that it was an example of irony.  Of course you had to read the entry to get it.

One of the callers had NOT READ the post.  So much for a judgement call.

So, in keeping with the proceedings, I have collected some of the more interesting 'bits of encouragement' I have received so far.

Here, for your reading pleasure:

"Being Green IS about politics.  Are you that naive?"

"I know so many people that are fed up with the green movement.  This is just like politics.  I keep it out of my real estate conversations."

"This just doesn't work!  Folks in Africa have made and make socioeconomic, religious and political choices that make them victims.  Americans didn't make decisions for them.  And we are not responsible for their plight.  I won't be send on a guilt trip because I am an American."

"I don't know, it sound's like politics.  Do as we say or else.  It has nothing to do with selling houses."

"A little full of ourselves, aren't we?"

"This is a bunch of Bulll#%*@  You are not convincing me at all!"

"Not every scientist believes the world is about to explode.  It's all DRAMA!"

"Shock value and scare tactics."

"So, who died and made you guardian of the planet?  A Realtor who cares about the environment?  Yeah, like a used car salesman who cares about gas mileage.  You are so clever."

Intermission

I made a choice from the get- go not to edit or delete comments.  Believe it or not, I like strong opinions

I am also assuming that most of these comments come from fellow Realtors.  Which, if you think about it, is even scarier!

Saving the best for last

I will end this with my absolute favorite comment.  Talk about irony!

"You look so hot in your picture that your very existence must be worsening global warming!"

Ha, so there!

Best of luck and Go Green.

Now, now Dougie. That's where things go just a little sideways while promoting what I think is a good cause you have here.  You are attempting to raise an awareness that this NRA and GOP card carrying right winger with a sense of humor finds worthy.

Hmmm...I wonder if any of those nay-sayers watch Leno at night.  Or maybe they listen to the radio, walk down the stree, go to malls, or walk down sidewalks.  You may turn off a bunch of people with your intentionally offensive irony...but you'll also endear yourself to a small group of buyers and sellers that will always be loyal because they identify you as "real."  If it works, go for it!

I am brand new to this site. I came to your blog because it had so many comments. I thought this was going to be a bit more professional in nature. You have done well getting us to look at your blog. Does this work for you? I see your irony but you seem to be a little bit angry. Is it because when you taught at the private school, you felt inferior? It seems that the others who commented are just having fun, but you are trying to prove something. Its alright to be an enviro, but please don't turn into a fascist and start wanting everyone to be like you. Don't start wanting there to be laws to enforce some nazi like green superior race. Green Environment in America filled with Undereducated Americans

This is the theme within a DNC controlled East Coast city by the name of Newark, NJ. The mayor (whom also happens to be the chairperson of mayors in the USA) will be installing Green" light bulbs through out the city instead of replacing the entire failing public school districts system with Green "men" from mars.

Color issue is running rapid through out the USA. I think there is going to be riots that is unparalleled in this country. But it is not going to be about Black, Brown and White but about Green.

Green Cars, Green Houses, Green Energy, and Green Envy.

I propose that we start an email campaign to our US Senators and US Representative - demanding civil rights for a Green Society, allowing Green to marry Green, and Green to Abort Blue.

I think Green should be included in the anti-discriminatory phrase at the end of every government and privately funded entities.

And all of us evil, right wing profiteers that are out there making a profit by selling homes, providing mortgages, inspecting houses and appraising them should be force to where green all year around.

10:11am • #180

Doug I may have went overboard on the nazi thing, but I did not call you a nazi. I said please do not become one or like one. I live in CA and that means lots folks who like to push their holier than thou enviro policies on everyone else. They are fascist in that they want the government to get into our business and homes and tell us how to run them. They tried unsuccessfully last month to have control of our thermostats from outside of our homes. If that is not fascist I do not know what is. If you want more samples of enviro fascism in CA, email me or read the papers.

Why are you speechless that Matt likes to drive a big American car? Is it any of your business what he drives? If you feel that it is, I stand by my fascist comment. In another post you refer to Kevin, who has a flag as his picture, as ultra-patriotic and anti-green. What country are you patriotic to? Is someone who flies a US flag, anti-green?

A green like superior race refers to people who think that they are morally superior to others because, in this case, they are green. Just because you may save some electricity or water does not make you superior or even better qualified to make judgements about what kind of car someone else drives.

I see the humor in most of the comments on this blog, but I still say you have some type of anger. You keep referring to humor, but I am not sure I'm seeing yours.

Keep blogging and being green. I won't push my lack of green on you if you don't push your green on me.

Eliud - Are you for real?  Have you read anything I have written so far?  I am the first person to agree that this movement has been high-jacked by fanatics and profiteers.

Your point of view, inflammatory to say the least,  does not help in any fashion or form.

The whole point of this entry was to show that I do have a sense of humor, that I can take a joke, that laughing is good.  A thick skin is okay.

I wish you would read some of my stuff and come back.  I think this is the main problem with the movement at the moment.  Your preconceptions are so biased that you do not give me a chance.  And, ironically enough, I think we might be on the same wavelength.

Give it a look, let me know what you think.

Douglas:

Keep in mind that Kenedy once said that 87% of people are against everything all the time. Ha

I think some of the backlash to the modern green movement is because it is being presented as if it all started with Al Gore and his movie. I was 9 years old  (1969) when we were taken to the library with all of the rest of the classes to watch a film on how acid rain, litter, chemical waste and other pollution was destroying our planet. I lived in a small mining community that retrofitted its smelter stacks so that the smoke produced was just steam rather than sulfur. I was a member of many green groups that cleaned highways, streams and forest of litter and debris. I have raised my kids to treat the planet with respect and conserve. I think many people live like this. At least the ones I meet. We can all do better and I think we should. But being green is not a new phenomena.

In 1971 at age 11, a very well respected scientist projected that the planet would be almost completly destroyed by mankind by the year 1984. I went to bed that night in tears. Thankfully we survived but we do need to do a better job of taking good care of our planet. Thanks for your post.

Anti Green Immigration Rallies will overflow the streets of Florida and Michigan. These two state delegates should go to their national convention wearing Green - as a symbol of the Green discrimination by the DNC leaders.

In my opinion, we should stop using any monetary tender that uses the color Green. This will unstimulated Bush's plan. Furthermore, the documented request for Bush's impeachment, to be filed in February 2009, should be on Green paper.

Your Truly, "Green Power" - donations will be accepted on the Pro-Green address: Emperor's Club

11:11am • #186

Ben - you had me there for a minute!  I thought, here comes my first official apology.

As I asked the person above, have you read anything else I have written so far?  I do believe fanatics have taken hold of some of the main tenets of this movement.  I completely agree with you that nobody has the right to impose green thinking on you or anybody who does not want to go that way.

I am sure there are plenty of eager beaver green do-gooders in California.  And I KNOW many of them are fanatics.  They are the extreme that is hurting this cause.

You are the main reason the green movement is not taking hold faster.  By you, I mean, people who have been turned off by the aggressive strategies and the holier than though attitude.  And Ben, I apologize to you for that.  I feel lousy that parts of the movement are being implemented in such a negative way.

Having said that, however, I will add this:  You ask me if I have anger.  Of course I do, everybody does.  Try being on the receiving end of these comments.

As far as my stupid comments on Matt and Kevin....there is my anger.  I lost it, my limit had been reached.  It was stupid, and I apologize for the remarks.  It is none of my business what people drive, how they want to spend their money, etc.

I have written that I am a selfish consumer.  I certainly don't do much right.  And as you can see from my blog, I am human and I make stupid mistakes (errors in judgement, really).  And I apologize, and I want dialogue, and I will not censor.

Seriously Ben, there is no reason why we should not be able to exchange ideas without acting like I am still in High School.

11:12am • #187

11:17am • #188

Alan - I am going to come back and give you a longer response later.  But I do want to thank you for sharing your point of view.  Again, yes, fanatics, profiteers and plain old crazy people have taken hold of some aspects of this movement.

The thing is, and this is just not negotiable, we can do better.

That's it.  That's my point.

Actually, my main point is how you save money by getting the most out of what you already have.

Going green is not about getting less or paying more.  It is about getting the most.  Period.

And so we save the earth in the process.  A little side benefit.

HI Douglas - you get so many comments I can't even read them all before I can comment!

I was a panelist today at Wayne State University (yup, in motor city, michigan) for a graduate journalism program. They staged a mock press conference -- that really wasn't mock -- to discuss "green." IMHO the most important points were

  1. most of the consumers have no idea what green is
  2. most of the press has no idea what green is
  3. interesting enough, one of the panelist (there were 6 of us) was from Michigan Organic Food and Farm Alliance!!! LOL! I thought of you!!

You seem to  have some consumers on your blog who appear to equate green with the type of vehicle they drive -- and they like their SUV's. That is great! Michigan was built on the auto industry and those big gas guzzlers! My response would be thank you for saving a couple of jobs. Our state is now faltering because it put all it's eggs in one energy sucking basket.

To Eliud - your comment, "Color issue is running rapid through out the USA. I think there is going to be riots that is unparalleled in this country. But it is not going to be about Black, Brown and White but about Green."

In all honesty, it is such ignorance that harms the green building industry. I don't think this is about personal choices, race or otherwise. It is about being responsible and using the natural resources we were given. All I can say is too bad Henry Ford didn't apply Hydrogen Technology back in the day....our economics would have been much different. Please return to the hole you crawled out of. Continue to spend your hard earned dollars from "being evil, right wing profiteers that are out there making a profit by selling homes, providing mortgages, inspecting houses and appraising them should be force to where green all year around."

Personally, I don't think Douglas ever made a point of bashing capitalism. None of us should be forced to do anything or work without making a profit. Our country was formed on entreprenuers and capitalists. Eliud -  If you choose to drive an energy sucking vehicle and spend your hard earned dollars on an energy sucking home, sobeit. We all make choices.

Please, I didn't mean the ignorance comment above as an insult and don't take it that way. Click the definition to see that it means being uninformed. Please become informed...or not. Just don't bash informed people for the (responsible) choices they make. Ma has spoken.

10:44pm • #202

Mary - Wow, probably one of the biggest comments I have received.  You had a big day.

You also seem to have more patience with my Commentators (if that is a word).  Mr. Eliud is a new breed of anti-Douglas that has just come to the forefront.  Some guy wrote that I was in bed with Hillary Clinton(this is the only comment I have deleted....EVER!), somebody else made a bad knock-knock joke about Green Hell.

Oh, I can't remember.

I don't hate capitalism.  Read my Blog about 'when did going green become political?'....I think going green is Capitalism at its best.  The USA can become the leader in green lifestyle and products.  Sell to the rest of the world.

No, let them take the ignorance comment as an insult.  I guess I am at the end of my rope.  Even my broker was telling me that this was becoming pointless.  You know, I was asked to blog to become an 'expert' in the field.  So that when people googled green or something like it they would come to me.  Well, they sure are getting plenty of laughs!

Extremist all. Status Quo is great, tie it all into the election (which is going no where! Don't even get me started...a new primary in Michigan for 12+ million??? Let's see if we can create another Haiti?)

We have an opportunity here to help individuals in this country. I have run plenty of credit reports (that I paid for out of my own pocket, by thy by) and have seen cell phone collections, energy company collections, etc.

Zero energy, healthy, green homes...what do any of your critics find wrong with that? Do they like cutting a check to the energy company every month? I, personally, would rather produce my own energy.

I know what my Dad would say. He would tell you to tell them, "go to grass." Oh, but grass is GREEN!!! isn't it!!! LOL!

Mary - Wow, you sure are in writing mode tonight!

But, yes, what exactly is wrong with my approach?  I mean, in the beginning I had to make up comments because it was deadsville.

I know I know, read all about in Maureen McCabe's new blog:  Sock Puppet.

Now the comments are coming out of nowhere and they seem pretty evenly divided into 2 camps.  For and Against.  And yes, the inflammatory ones are more fun to dissect and respond.

However, and this is important, why is there so much anger?

It's like the Obama Church thing.  I was so turned off by the hateful speech that I have changed my mind.  He looked like the perfect person, combination of colors, even keeled, didn't sound like a politician.

I didn't just have to smell the coffee on that one.  I picked the beans.

OK Douglas - one more from me tonight.

I am proud of my moderator status in this group. I wrote a very long response because this post, this was based on your good organic post and it started out pretty good then denigrated to a point where misunderstanding can, and has -- to be quite honest, taken place. This, by the way, is through no fault of your own. You are a very good advocate for what you (we) believe in. Others have responded to this post and it has become inflamed.

I am simply trying to bring it back on track.

The guidelines set up for this forum are, in JaneAnne's words, "This Group formed when janeAnne (founder) got to know a friendly gathering of professionals who also write great stuff. . . . NOT a forum for debate, THIS is a place for camaraderie. PLEASE DO JOIN US for . . . . . . . Keep-it-real, level-headed news for your TRENDY, shades-of-green RESIDENTIAL clients, ECO-friendly Referral Resources, INFO on "green" properties, INFO on eco-wise LAND use,value-added land planning, sustainable design & development...and more. ***** WELCOME "

Green is good for you, for me, my neighbor and the planet. That can not be denied.

Let's keep it clean, share ideas and fun, learn in the process and be kind.

Ma spoke again.

I don't believe in censorship, and I will stick to my guns on that one.  I am also glad people haven't been offended enough to take the comments off themselves.

Thank you again Mary for your support.  I do appreciate it.

Hi Douglas - I am going to respond one more time tonight because I have to tend to business tomorrow and don't want to let this go...

At first I was trying to show people why being a green Realtor was a good thing. Being a "green" realtor is always a good thing and you don't need to "show" anyone anything. Those who believe in this philosophy will help you find your way.

Went Organic.  The world went nuts.   Actually, at Wayne State U today, the most questions were asked of the Organic Food and Farm Alliance. She was apologizing because she didn't want to steal the show but the questions kept coming back to her. I still haven't figured it out...was she the most approachable because it was something we all know and love -- eating and nutrition? Or was it because she was so good at relaying her message? I'll send feelers out then write a blog!

I don't believe in censorship, and I will stick to my guns on that one.  I am also glad people haven't been offended enough to take the comments off themselves.  True. But let us not harm our industry by taking things in a direction that will lead us back to the 70's and 80's. It has taken 20+ years and we are making progress. Let's not give in to people who shoot from the hip without doing research.

Again, good job my faithful friend. A blessed weekend to you!

Eliud - that link to Emperorsclub.com (or something like that) doesn't work.

Not that I care, by the way.

Douglas - Well, I must say that I'd like to concentrate on the post...rather than the comments. Sometimes the comments add to and are better than the post, and sometimes not.  I'm not sure which is the case here but simply call me a new subscriber.  I'll get to that later...

Perhaps this statement did me in, "I made a choice from the get- go not to edit or delete comments.  Believe it or not, I like strong opinions."  Agreed.  Part of what makes a Blog so different than an editorial in a newspaper or a radio show with listeners calling in...is the thread.  It can be followed and the seeds of new insights and opinions and banter can be followed and documented.  It's a beautiful thing really.  Personally, the best posts I've read and written provided food for thought in the comments, I learned and gave thought to things I may not have been privy too prior.

I like your style, it seems to be a no-holds barred 'I am me and these are my thoughts' way of doing things.  Whether I agree with you or not isn't nearly as important as getting something out of whatever you have to contribute.  What I got so far is you are an advocate of environmental consciousness, and that's damn important in my view.  The critics can call it whatever they want and I welcome the retorts along the way, yet I have the staunch feeling that our very earth is not something to be taken for granted.  I'm not the most environmentally astute guy and I certainly don't provide to the cause all I can at this point, but....and there are always but's....I can appreciate a good idea when it comes my way.  At least I hope...

Our world is something special and we can either choose to treat it as such or sit back and watch and/or interact with the raping and pillaging we are so accustom to seeing on Mother Earth.  I'm not a textbook religious chap myself, but I do know there is a higher power....and I walk upon it each day I breath a bit of life.  Be you man, I'm confident your cause is more than just.

Jason- Thank you, first of all, for your thoughtful comment.  In this particular case, the comments are much more interesting than the post itself.  My point was to bring about discussion.  Some posts are written in such a manner that I am far more interested in what the comments say than the conclusion the author reached.  That, in my opinion, is a successful blog.

Strong opinions are good and always give you an insight (good or bad) into the psyche of a person.  How many times has a 'calm and composed' person revealed himself or herself to be a racist or a homophobe when under pressure?  All the time.  It is quite an interesting ability to maneuver through strong emotions without loosing your dignity in the process.

Yes, my style is no-holds barred.  But as you can see (read) I've had to get an extra tough skin coat.  I have found, as a fairly new Realtor, that I happen to be in a profession that does not like change very much.  As a former teacher I had to constantly evolve, change, learn new curriculum (even a new language, Sign, at one point).

Another thing that I am trying to do is to show that Realtors have to go back to being REAL.  Unfortunately, at the moment both Realtors and Mortgage Brokers are not enjoying public adoration (and some of it well deserved).  Yes, a point can be made that we are in this horrible mess because of the public's greed and the greed of the investors.

But that sword cuts both ways.  When I got my Realtor license last year I found out that here in Orlando Realtors are below lawyers and used car salesmen in Trustworthiness.

I care about the environment.  I care about my legacy as a human being that moves land ownership from one person to the next.  Hopefully I get to work with people who want to allow a little of green education to be part of the process.  So far I have been very lucky.  And  part of that has been my refusal to be less than honest or to kiss butt.  It has not made me a popular blogger, but my customers enjoy the give and take when they do read my stuff (I always ask them to).

Jason, thank you for sharing a view that is obviously open to new ideas.  We are the next generation of Realty and we have to adapt.  Green homes are selling, even in this down market.

Thank you, I will make a point to read some of your stuff (and comment :)

Eliud - I just re-read your 3/19 rant.  The more I distance myself from it.....the crazier you sound.  I mean, you sound completely angry and close minded.

I can't believe how narrow-minded some folks are.  As a REALTOR and an environmental scientist, I find the assumption that you can't be a REALTOR and still care about the environment rather offensive.  If nothing else, we have more opportunities to do little things in our daily lives that can help conserve resources.  We have about 7,000 REALTORS in San Antonio; they're here no matter what.  But if all 7,000 took steps to use less paper, recycle more, drive cars that have high gas mileage, organize our showings so as to minimize driving, etc. just think of how much we'd save!  Of course, that all requires some effort to change our ways and a little brain power too.

Sylvie - Wow, Realtor and Scientist.  I was a teacher, and now I am a Realtor.  Teaching, Science and the temporary passing on of land.

We really don't own anything, it all goes back into the fold.  Eventually.

Sylvie, I believe that the rumblings we have heard so far are just the death rattle of the old guard.

I came into Real Estate knowing it was a profession that had been severely wounded by greed.  I believe we offer an amazing service, and as such, Real Estate is a noble way to parcel out land and to educate people about the responsibility of being part of this world.

It all comes around, eventually.

Thank you for your comment.
