One of the goals I have for my blog on ActiveRain is to let people know what a beautiful place Brookings, Oregon is and why people should come to visit. Once someone visits they realize they want to make Brookings their home!

The Oregon Coast Trail follows 362 miles of Oregon coastline, starting as you cross the Washington State border, at the north jetty of the Columbia River, and finishing just south of Brookings, Oregon. The Oregon Coast Trail wanders through Samuel Boardman State Park in a series of short and often steep spurts between viewpoints. The park has spectacular stretches of rocky overlooks and not overly crowded beaches. There are numerous vista points along Highway 101, but to fully enjoy and appreciate Samuel Boardman State Park you need to take a hike on one of the well maintained trails.

These photos were taken on the Oregon Coast Trail between Lone Ranch and Cape Ferello. Difficulty Level: easy to moderate; dress warmly, pack drinking water and watch out for tides. Maps: Oregon Coast Trail Brochure is available through the Oregon Parks Information Center. www.oregonstateparks.org/images/pdf/coast_trail_guide.pdf

Japanese Bombing Site Trail #1118 Mount Emily with an elevation of 2,884 feet is a mountain in the Klamath Mountains of southwestern Oregon in the United States. It is located in southern Curry County in the extreme southwest corner of the state, near Brookings, approximately 5 mi (8 km) from the Pacific Ocean and 5 mi (8 km) from the California state line.On September 9, 1942, a Japanese I-25 (submarine) surfaced near Cape Blanco, Oregon, and launched a small seaplane which dropped incendiary bombs on Mount Emily starting multiple forest fires. The Fire Lookout stationed at the Mount Emily Fire Lookout Tower played a major role in "The Lookout Air Raid of 1942" which became the first bombing of the continental United States by an enemy aircraft. The site of the bombing was listed in the National Register of Historic Places (as the Wheeler Ridge Japanese Bombing Site) in July 2006

Great minds obviously think alike. I'm new to ActiveRain and I was thinking of making my blog about the nature trails in our area. I have set a personal goal of hiking 500 miles of trails by my 50th birthday which shouldn't be hard to do with the number of trails in our area.

I'll look for you on the trail!

Teresa- thanks for your comments. You have a great goal. So... how far into that goal are you? Hiking is one of the things we enjoy doing as a family.

I will see you on the trail!

Ummm...  I still have 500 miles to go. =)

It is a new goal in conjunction with a weight-loss goal and I just got my doctor to give me the green light to start hiking.  Of course, now it is raining after weeks of glorious weather.  But I still have a little over 5 years, so I think I can do it.

Any advise for a newbie hiker?

Good for you Teresa getting in shape. Hiking is a good way to do that! So here is a little advise... Good shoes, supportive..and stick to the trail! My husband loves to take us booney bashing. I don't like that. I like to stick to the PATH! And start out slow don't over do it. Dress in layers and bring a water bottle. Pretty basic stuff. OH and don't forget your camera!
