The Green Owl- Delray Beach on Atlantic Avenue-Our Hometown Special Place!

My favorite street in Delray Beach is Atlantic Avenue and it has been fun and interesting The Green Owlwatching as it has grown.  The Ave has become “the” place to be especially on Friday and Saturday nights, where you can choose from any number of fun and fine dining establishments.

And yet, there are some things that you are just as happy to see stay the same.

The Green Owl is one of those places.  Founded in 1981, this neighborhood corner cafe has been serving residents and visiting guests for over 30 years.  And, in that time, you can still get a cup of coffee for less than what you’d pay at that famous place that’s on every corner; you can get a Mini-breakfast (just enough to start your day) for under $4.00, and an order of fries for $1.50!

We stop at the Green Owl for breakfast after our morning walk at Delray Beach about 4 times a week and it is part of our ritual.  It is about as hometown as you can get.  There’s always someone sitting at the counter working a crossword puzzle while having a cup of coffee or chatting with the person across the way.

On weekends you’ll see families there for that special Sunday morning treat; there is an older gentleman there who has breakfast there many mornings.  He owned the store just across the street that was a fixture for over 50 years.  That store has been sold, and we’re all waiting to see the next chapter in the story for that corner.

The Green OwlWhen the weather is good (but isn’t it always in Delray?), you can choose to sit outside and become part of the “street” scene.  It’s not unusual for some of the customers to be served their breakfast in a bowl directly on the sidewalk, while their owners are having their own breakfast of grits, eggs, pancakes or french toast.

Here’s what I love about the Green Owl in Delray :

- Regular food at realistic prices- scrambled eggs are meant to be just that…. not something that people try to make “more interesting”

- The waitstaff always welcomes you with a smile and “take a seat anywhere”.

-  When we walk in, we don’t even have to ask for our coffee anymore…. it’s already on its way to the table.

-  It’s everything you see in movies and wish for…. a place where you can go and someone at the next table might hear your conversation and chime in with their opinion.   I love it!

BARFF- when they were closed for 10 days this summer everyone went nuts!

Wayne- I agree.  It's so much fun to try the Non-chain local restaurants.

Dorie- I loved talking with you as well!   Let's see what we can do to get him to start blogging!

Sheila- This is our favorite breakfast place, especially when we get to set outside and watch the activity on Atlantic.

Bobbie- it's fun because you can see the "regulars" and nod and say hello even if you don't know them.

Janis- come down during season when your weather up your way is a little cold!

Kristin- it is such a landmark and a favorite place of many.

Barbara-Jo- I actually see quite a few people in there conducting business.

Scott- let me know if you have time for a cup of coffee.

Richie- you would love it!  Very small town, no pretension.

Jeffrey- there's got to be tucked away place in your area!

Michael- you hit it on the head..... it's what makes it a neighborhood.

Kathy,

The Green Owl has won my heart and I don't even live there! If I did, I would have the perfect place to start my day. What a neat gathering place! It's affordable and homey. I would feel like I belong and I think it would be a great place to network with others too or to conduct business. The Green Owl appears to be stimulating and a friendly place to do business.

Thanks for sharing. Although a franchise can be exciting, I get more excited about places like The Green Owl!!!

Looks like a good place to unwind and relax to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Thanks for sharing Kathy!

The Green Owl sounds wonderful!  Brings back fond memories of my grandmother working at the Owl Diner when I was a teen.  I would visit her with my friends and she would give us quarters to play the juke box!

Patricia- we're on the same wave length!  When we take our road trips, we try to find local places and not just the big chains.

Beth- sounds good but our biggest calorie splurge at breakfast would be the pancakes.

Patty- Stop there for lunch the next time you're on Atlantic.

Sharon- I wonder if there's some kind of connection with diners and "owls" in the name.

Hi Kathy, the Green Owl sounds like a fun place to have a meal and if one can be greeted with a smile when you walk in that's half the experience to me. Thanks for sharing one of your favorite hangout.

Kathy, the Green Owl seems like my kind of place, relaxed and friendly. A mini breakfast is just down my alley, most places serve too much.
