Plant Smart with Native Plants in Your State.

Planting native plants in your state like here in Connecticut is a smart move because these plants need less watering, fertilizer and pesticides to flourish. The second huge benefit is that they support the local wildlife providing food and shelter to not only birds but insects, butterflies, bees and ground animals.

Fill bird feeder and feed the birds for a day, plant native plants and feed birds for years.

Wildlife habitat needs cover to survive, cluster plants creating thickets are good as well as evergreen trees and bushes that provide year round cover.

Depending on the region you live in, rainfall, earth components, climate will all have an effect on your garden and yard. Planting Native Plants can help diversify the seasonal food source and cover for wildlife in your area. As well native plants are easier to take care and need less extra watering, fertilizer and pesticides if at all any.

For here in Connecticut some great native plants that provide berries as food in the fall, winter and spring are Highbush Blueberry, Red Chokeberry, Huckleberry and Sweet Pepper Bush.  Below is a list of Seasonal Food and Cover Sources for the Connecticut Habitat.

Connecticut Good Plants

Here in Connecticut there are 2,800 plant species, 1,800 of them are native, 1000 are non-native and 96 are invasive and should be removed if found

Peter Picone, Wildlife Biologist with the Connecticut DEEP Wildlife Division has authored an informative book on Connecticut habitat and wildlife ‘Wildlife Is My Passion”.

I've been wanting to add some Winter Berry Reds in our backyard for the Holiday- like Visual and to feed birds in later winter.
