See the update to this blog: Stones to Mountains:-)

I was just reading a local news release, and it appears the unemployment in my home county, Flagler County, Florida is now the highest in the state, and close to the highest in the nation.  Two years ago, this was the fastest booming county in the country, full of new jobs, new construction, new shops and plenty of optimism about the future. You could smell it in the air! The grand openings were truly grand, and it seemed that money was plentiful.  This was two short years ago...

Why am I writing this, and how is it relevant to the title of this post?

Here goes: I feel like a fish out of water, trying to splash on rock solid ground, not yet realizing that the terrain has changed, or not knowing how to adapt to the new surroundings. I market things for a living - that's all I know, and up until the last few weeks, I thought I was pretty darn good at it. A few months ago, my agency, which consists mostly of my sweet husband and myself, was asked to promote a Jazz Festival for a regional not for profit organization, NEFJA. They have been around for over twenty years, and the festival coming up in the beginning of May would be their 3rd... How hard could it be, right?

Our oldest plays piano, and, when given a choice of music to play, will always gravitate towards jazz.  For most of his childhood, my mom took it upon herself to pay for his music lessons - a gift for him of sorts, and she's been doing it for a decade now, for which I am extremely grateful, as there have been moments when I couldn't have done that. Knowing that all proceeds from the events go towards giving college scholarships to deserving music students who may otherwise not be able to pursue music - made our decision all the more simple.

Vincent Gardner of Jazz at Lincoln Center

So for the past  two months we have been trying to raise funds to bring Freddy Cole, Eddie Henderson, Vince Gardner etc to play in our own back yard, and it's not cheap.  But it's been depressing to say the least! Calling on the same businesses that sponsored it last year only to find out they are in foreclosure or out of business makes it even worse.... There is simply no money here for charity, and with the music programs slashed in schools - very little opportunity for anyone to pursue the arts, which brings me to my point:

Alex Nguyen

The arts and music inject a healthy dose of optimism into any place and its people, always have, but when it is needed the most, no one can afford to foot the bill... So what does one do, especially when it comes to helping preserve an endangered art form?  No one here will die if the festival doesn't happen this year; most people's lives will remain essentially the same, except for a handful of kids who are practicing on a used trumpet somewhere in an empty room, and who have dreams of being on the stage at Lincoln Center, or in front of a class full of dreamy eyed idealists. Kids who have yet to learn that the ability to enjoy and create art is also predicated on money...  If this was in a metropolitan place with news agencies and millions of people - it would probably not be difficult to get Oprah Winfrey and Big Give to contribute, or Bill Gates or Steve Jobes, or any number of people and corporations who have contributed to great causes in the past. But this place is rather small, and the press no longer cares to talk about it since it's not growing anymore - it's shrinking... But the people haven't changed, and the necessity for love, music, humanity remains stronger than ever...

If anyone has any fundraising ideas we've not yet explored, please shoot me an email.
The web address for the festival is: http://www.legacyjazz.com/  - and contrary to my tone, it will happen, one way or another. It would be great if this optimism and certainty were backed by some green paper coming in.:-) Thanks for listening.

I wish I had a great idea for you, but nothing's ringing any bells.  You have my absolute agreement in your cause and in the truth that music is necessary.  People create it, animals create it, the wind creates it.........all life needs it.  It is the sound of the soul of the world.  Jazz is uniquely American in origin and should be treasured.

I wish you inspiration and miracles.  You will do it!

Thnk you for your comments and the sweet pic-

My dear Elaine - I figure evey little bit helps, and while I am not yet getting any brilliant ideas out of it, i am hoping that Google will find the site for the fest a bit easier now that it's in here:-) Of course I will keep every one posted on anything ingenious if that should happen as well.
You are a sweetheart and thank you for the words of encouragement!

Inna - I understand what you are going thru. Just had a conversation with a friend last night and we where speaking about how no one here is spending anything. Dan also has been trying to fund-raise and has been finding it very difficult. I wish I had a great idea that would bring you a boat load of cash, but we have not come up with one.

Don't know how much your trying to raise and when you need it by...community tag sale? flower sale for easter?

Sweet Sandra! We need to raise quite a bit more than any community tag sale will generate, but of course we do have a few ideas, that may or may not work but it's worth a try, though it'll be subject for another blog altogether. The reason I posted this it two fold: i do need Google to start finding the www.legacyjazz.com and i figured there are quite a few artist/musicians here as well as people with more funraising experience than i have who would probab;y be willing to share some ideas... I will, of course, do the same, should we get lucky with a few ideas of ours:-) In answer to your question on how much we need - we are hoping for 40-50K total, some of which we already have. We need that to pay for the musicians including their travel, and of course promote the event, and most imortantly for scholarships. Everything that we could get donated or discounted locally we already got, so most of our musicians will be staying in a really nifty hotel here free of charge - which is sooooo neat! I just wish we started working on this a year ago!
Sorry for the long comment, and you are a sweetheart!!! What is Dan raising money for, bytheway?

Inna, I don't know if it will work, but try to contact someone at the New Orleans Jazz Fest Foundation.  They may have some pointers for you.  www.jazzandheritage.org  (I broke the link so it wouldn't take away from your site's google juice)

Inna - So sorry...had no idea you needed to raise the big bucks. The only experience I have had in raising money is for local campaigns. Our biggest fund raiser has always been a dinner. Selling tickets any where from $100-$500 a pop. Plus an ad book.... (printer donates the printing costs)...Can bring in quite of bit of money, however I don't know if you have the time.

To answer your other question, Dan is raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Sandra, i am sure that somehow or other it will all work out. We are pringing a fest guide, and that's bringing in a bit of case, tickets sales are also helping... WE still have a few months, not enough, but it never really is. Will keep you all posted on what we do and how...

INNA!  Way to Blog for a Cause, woman!   This is excellent and I am featuring it in the Blog For A Cause Group!

How much do you need to raise and what is the deadline?

Here's an idea.. Update this blog, get Oprah Winfrey's name and Big Give in it and let Google find her for you.  She is a great supporter of the Arts and you just never know!

Gotta support the Arts, Inna.

Okay, now everybody that commented here needs to forward the blog link to Oprah.

Who has her email address?  (This may be the part where I become useless!)

Unfortunately, it seems that no one has her email addresses, only the links to the official forms that one would need to fill out. It's a pain in the butt, but if anyone is willing to do it - that would be awesome!!!

Also, for you of those who commented, if it's not too much trouble to just go back to the blog and click on the link for the festival, www.legacyjazz.com  - it will help me with my google juice:-)

Clicking away!  Anything to help the cause!

Inna:  I have been trying to come up with some sort of solution to your problem, but I'm afraid that all my ideas have probably already been tried by you.  The only thing I could suggest is to ask doctors, lawyers, and corporations for donations.  Try to get the local tv's attention so that you can get some free air time.  Leave some money cans at different stores.  Have a silent auction, or a golf tournament.  Pizza Hut and Dominos have fundraising kits... you might try that.  I did click on your website four or five times to give you some google juice.  Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Wow,

You got quite a number of good suggestions, and a few great ones. I am sure that many would click (including myself).

Why does it sound like a lesson how not to drown?

Maybe because no matter what we say about culture and music in particular, they are secondary to major things in life. With the 'shrinking' economy and money drying out, it is no surprise that it is more difficult to raise the money.

Well, it is the easiest to rant, and you are waiting for a $40K idea. What about talking to Eddie Money, who happens to live in your town. If you can have him e-mail to his sphere of influence, and people in the industry and try to get their support, you may hit the gold.

The only thing I am afraid of is that yu have done it already, and... it did not bring you a penny.

Jan, thank you for all of these suggestions. We are 'hitting up' corporations and such for cash, and the local TV station is being pretty generous, so it looks like we will get the TV time and some bucks out of that. Will look into those fundraising kits form PH and Dominos though. I really appreciate every idea and the clicks, of course. Will let you all know what we are upto! and thank you again:-)

Jon, I am not sure i get the drowning reference, but then again, maybe it's just a bit late. As for us waiting for a 40K idea - that's not entirely accurate. We have already spokeng with Eddie Money for various reasons, as well as many others in and around the communty seeking support.  The reason for this post wasn't so much a rant as asking for ideas and feedback from people here - some of whom i am sure have run across a great idea or two.  It was also to get the Festival's website to start coming up on Google, since it's a brand new site - we wanted to force the indexing a bit... There are a few other things in the works at the moment, no guarantee of success, but should yield something reasonably decent.

Thank you for your feedback, and i will post on this soon.

Inna - I don't have any suggestions aside from those offered, but I can click those links to help you out.

Interestingly enough, we were just talking about the cuts in the arts and music from an educational standpoint at dinner last night - how very sad and short sighted.  I call 'em like I see 'em and in this case it would be "penny wise and pound foolish".

I have little doubt you'll get this off and running.

Eric, you are a sweetheart! I knew I could count on the pro-musician to respond. Thank you my friend, and we'll let you know how it goes with the Union.  We are already in talks with public tv and radio, so hopefully they can give us some much needed press.
Thank you again for all your help!

BTW: for any of you who might find yourselves 'needing' to be in a serene neatly tucked away place between St. Augustine and Daytona, where you can hang with the dolphins, play some golf, walk the streets of the oldest city in the nation, and take in some great jazz while you are at it - we have negotiated some fabulous travel and lodging deals which will be on the www.legacyjazz.com by Monday Morning... So, if you are itching for a great vacation - come on over, and I'll buy you a martini:-)

Jackie, thank you, my dear! This organization has been the little engine that could for the past 20+ years, and one way or another it will happen. The words of encouragement with this are just as priceless as the ideas exchanged, and I am very grateful!
