I saw the post on the green contest, and since I am wearing 2 kinds of green this beautiful Crestline spring (almost)day, I may as well put in my green 2cents.
Since we live in the mountains, we try to keep our trash down as much as we can. We recyle everything that we are able. We hate that whenever we purchase something, it usually comes in some awful non-recyclable package with so much excessive plastic and junk. We have our old energy sucking light bulbs changed out to the new green bulbs.
We are going to get a compost pile started soon, but since we've been working on our house through the winter, this took a backseat. We try not to be mass consumers, and whatever junk mail we accumulate we use as firestarters in the winter months (sorry, mountains again, we have a regular fireplace, but at least it doesn't go to a landfill).
I plant as many trees as I can that will fit into my backyard master gardening plan, and planted bulbs of daffodils and tulips to help beautify my Crestline,CA community. They are just now starting to come up and they really help make town look better.
How is it that I can't get rid of the white space in between pictures? Oh, well, someone teach me...
My husband drives a car that gets great gas mileage since he puts more miles on the car, and I have the not so fuel efficient mini-SUV (Saturn VUE) that does still get good mileage. As soon as we can make the switch to hybrids, we are. I loathe HUMMERS even though I have clients that drive them, and can't stand to see gross polluting cars. I drive the speed limit and take my time to save gas, and now that I live where there are no freeways on a daily basis, it makes me realize how dumb the rest of the population is that speed everywhere they go, wasting gas and not getting there any faster.
We reuse whatever we can, and if there's something we don't need anymore, my husband takes it to his warehouse and they give it to the different ministries that pick up supplies and food and etc and redistribute it to people who may not have the money to buy it. We try to simplify our lives as much as we can because we've never had the attitude of "if no one else is doing it why should I?" At some point in your life, you realize that even with all the stuff, you are no happier or better off than you used to be. I know that being a piece of "green"fruit on the vine of the Lord helps also, knowing that we should be a better steward of the resources that the Good Lord has given to us and that we are continually blessed in doing so. We are also reminded that we are temporary on this earth, and that we need to leave it in better shape than we found it for our children.
Take care all, and enjoy the beautiful day.
