The Beverly Hills Courthouse in Beverly Hills CA succumbs to Budget Cuts

As most of us have been affected by the downturn of the economy in the past few years, one unlikely institution has succumbed to Budget Cuts as well.

Quietly without much fanfare the Beverly Hills Court House has closed its doors to hearing Court Cases. The famous visitors who made appearances in this venerable institution consisted of some of the famous or should I say the infamous Hollywood Celebrities such as: Zsazsa Gabor, Robert Downey, Jr., and Lindsey Lohan to name a few. There were many others whose names slip my mind right now.

Often times as I was driving down Burton Way I could see heavy traffic congestions. Then as I drove by the Beverly Hills Courthouse I could see the Paparazzi with cameras in hand and long lines of tourist standing by the entrance door wanting to have a glimpse at some of the famous accused celebrities.

Now the courthouse only handles traffic tickets. How strange to see a virtually empty building with hardly no life in it. The strange upside is that, now there are fewer tourists and less traffic on Burton Way. How sad, now I miss the drama, the traffic inconvenience and the pesky paparazzi and the tourists.

I am sure the Celebrities who need to make Court Appearances will miss the Beverly Hills Courthouse too, since now they will need to go to the Downtown Courthouses where the “common criminals” are being tried. Not as convenient as being five to ten minute drive from their upscale homes to face justice. Now it will be a commute to Downtown Los Angeles. Well that is punishment already!

Hi Endre - Funny, and not a bit sad, but it does make me concerned when it appears that even Beverly Hills is having financial problems. What next, a dollar store on Rodeo Dr.?

We are going to be seeing more and more of this as governments start to realize that they have to control their spending.

Michael very cute but maybe there is more to it here...

Jennifer indeed it is good for Equal Opportunity:)

Alexandra they closed the West Side Court House and all traffic violations are handled now by the Beverly Hills Courthouse, just no Hearings or Trials....

Hella indeed the morning rush hour was just extended....

Toni, the Court System is sadly California and Los Angeles....I am sure if they could have contributed they would have:)

Endre - It is interesting that the Beverley Hills Court House building is still open for traffic tickets, but not court cases.  You will miss the crowds and the local circus with this latest change!

It is my understanding that with all the lawyers and doctors who have been arrested for DUI, all the graffiti on the cell walls was written in Latin!

Nice post, Endre... Great photos and thanks for the insights. I didn't really think about the 'stars' having to go downtown now. Wow, if those walls could talk. It is kind of weird to see a building closed and empty when for years it was bustling with activity.

I keep wondering what we're doing with all this money we're saving. My "appointed" court house is in Orange and while it is busier than ever, they have reduced their hours, closing up at 4 instead of 5. Coupled with schools shutting down or starting up later, furlough days, "convenience fees" to pay everything online...where is it all going? I do feel a little sorry for the Beverly Hills folks. While I find the celebrity lifestyle a little ridiculous, they have money because we gave it to them so we have to say it was fairly earned (if not deserved), and further inconvenience for anyone who pays taxes to have fairly convenient services available to them isn't much fun.

Endre,

Well if they close the courthouse completely, it may be an excellent real estate opportunity. I know someone who sold a post office in the Atlanta area and made quite a good commission. You never know.

More is on the way with budget cuts especially California and Illinois to name just a few. I do hope that we are not headed for another recession. It appears some of the signs are there.

Endre, yes, famous people will not like being mixed in with the common people when they have to go to court.

No doubt we are going to see more of this in the public and government sector. Guess the paparazzi will have to hang out somewhere else - no doubt the court cases will continue and we will have a more interesting mix of the famous and the infamous. LOL
