Mad Batter Cafe and Bakery has been on the Western Carolina University campus in Cullowhee, NC since 1998. Jeanette Evans, the owner, has provided a groovy, warm and inviting atmosphere with eclectic furnishings, good music and a tantalizing menu from the beginning. For those of us who think breakfast is the best meal of the day, The Mad Batter offers their breakfast menu all day.
Jeanette Evans uses the freshest ingredients for her meals, including produce from her own garden. There are daily fresh soups, all kinds of sandwiches and wraps, pizzas, salads and don't forget the pastries baked right on the premises. The lure of gourmet coffees attract a steady stream of customers - students, staff, faculty and local people meet there on a daily basis to enjoy not only the restaurant but also the sense of community The Mad Batter provides.
When I said hello to Jeanette and complimented her on her business and success, she asked if I had seen the Patio. She added the Patio onto the restaurant a few years ago and indeed, it is one of the best hidden secrets in Cullowhee, NC. She showed me out to the Patio and I was immediately in love with the space. Lots of plants, a mermaid fountain amid a rock garden, the green Buddha, the hand sculptures without thumbs, the boldy bright murals, the black wire furniture...all of it! The music playing in the Patio and the whole experience made it so easy to imagine being miles away from Cullowhee!
I'm already looking forward to my next chance to go hang out at the Mad Batter in Cullowhee. It's easy to find, right in the center of the WCU campus at 568 Centennial Drive. Those people working at WCU are so lucky to have this refuge so handy to them. Guess I'll have to go often, I can't decide what to order ;-).
