What is Lyft and how could you use it?

Lyft Share a Ride

Have you heard of the new phenomena called Lyft?  I did not until my son gifted me a Groupon coupon for Lyft to use, while I am visiting him in Seattle.

My son was originally thinking of renting me a bike but, three day prior to my arrival in Seattle, while showing DC Condos, I twisted my ankle on one of our Capital's poorly designed sidewalk. (No, I would not think of suing anyone). I could hardly step on my foot, but I was determined to go on with the planned visit. I told my son that at this point a wheel-chair would be more appropriate than a bike.

This is where Lyft came in very handy.

We used their service numerous times in the city.  Getting a ride was as easy as clicking "Request a Ride" on our phone and a driver was there with in 2-5 minutes. We enjoyed meeting the drivers and chatting with them about their life, career, etc.  They spoke clear English and knew the city.  There was no haggling about price, or contribution and that included the tip. At the end of the trip driver and rider rate each-other on the app.

Lyft is a newer concept of "sharing a ride" at a lower cost.  The drivers are sharing their cars with the rider.  The individual drivers who signs up are very friendly people who are looking to supplement their income in a respectable way.

How does Lyft works?

The customer downloads the Lyft app to their phone and follows the prompts.  It is very simple and easy.  Since the payments for the ride that are called contributions, and are charged to a one's credit card; the consumer needs to provide their credit card information.

Before the driver arrives, the passanger can see the car, the driver's name and his picture.

Are Lyft drivers insured?

According to Lyft, each driver is insured up to $1,000,000.

Where is the Lyft service available?

As of August 1, 2013, Lyft started operating in Washington DC. I took a ride to the Reagan National and the price for this ride was not much better than a taxi.  However, the ride was much more enjoyable and interesting. I met a fellow entrepreneur.

I know that they are available in San Francisco and LA and in a few other states, i cannot find a site listing all the cities their service is available.
