Why Do Brokers Continue To Recycle Agents Who Have A Poor Work Ethic?

Great post Barbara, unfortunately most brokers will just keep these people, largely because it makes them look/feel more impressive with a larger company, unfortunately their earnings do not mirror this.

On the other hand Pat has some interesting thoughts in comment #86

We often read posts about agents with a poor work ethic.  Those who don’t return calls; those who drop the ball after putting a deal together; and those who don’t pay attention to business.  Real estate agents come in many flavors and one that is prevalent is the agent with a “poor work ethic.”

Why do some have a poor work ethic while others are focused on getting the job done in a professional manner?  Why do some close a transaction with no bumps in the road, while with others it’s an uphill battle?

The one major factor that’s missing with the agent who exhibits a poor work ethic is “passion.”  Passion is the missing link.  Passion for what they do every day is the necessary ingredient that results in “good work ethic.”

Our profession is like a magnet for everyone who is unemployed; for those who decide to “try” another profession; and for the person who has observed a “top producing agent” making the business look “easy.”  Everyone’s open to an “easy job” and if it’s made to look easy, it probably is!!!!  That’s the trigger!!

Once he/she pulls the trigger and the newly licensed agent experiences the full force of the real estate business, the word “easy” is no longer synonymous with “real estate.”  However, the agent is now in the game, and may have a deal or two pending, but the thought of proceeding to finish the battle is out of the question.  It’s easier to drop the ball.  It’s easier to go to the next deal and leave the work to the cooperating agent.  It’s easier to finish the transaction as easily as one can, and that’s by doing nothing.

The agent without passion for the business will always have a poor work ethic, and it’s up to the broker/owner to dismiss that element in the early stage of his/her career.  Other broker/owners must be more selective in their hiring.  Those who are dismissed should be eliminated permanently and not recycled.
