Victoria BC Totem Poles ...Part One
Around the City of Victoria and Vancouver Island you'll find many totem poles that have been carved by local first nation people who lived here and many are still living in Victoria BC. Included in the many Totem Pole collection in Victoria...located in Beacon Hill Park is the World Tallest Totem Pole at 127' 7" Carved 1956 by Chief and head carver "Mungo Martin","David Martin" and "Henry Hunt" at Thunderbird Park in the historical Carving Shed.In Thunderbird Park there are many old Totem Poles, many of which are now priceless BC First Nation Art.
My life long friend Tony Hunt was the grand son of the Chief Mungo Martin, Tony contributed to our totem pole collection in later years by carving a Pole by himself for a new Conference and Convention Center attached to our World Famous Fairmont Empress Hotel. The Victoria Real Estate Board Donated the pole to the City of Victoria and commissioned Tony Hunt to Carve it for them, in 1982. The Pole sat in storage while the city fathers decided when and where to build the Victoria Conference and Convention Center, and after a lot of politicking it was finally built by 1989. Enjoy the photos.here and more on Google photo
This pole was taken down in 2001 and restored many donations were raised to cover the Cost of restoration, and their names are in the tablet attached to the pole, Yours Truley Fred and Jane both donated to this worhwhile cause.
