School Kids Design, Develop and Build ~~ TERRACE TOWN 2008 ~~
Terrace Town 2008 Participant, Ashley Logan Komers with mom, Laurie
Over 1100 Students of Madison, WI Schools, use recycled materials to build Terrace Town 2008!
Growing GREEN never looked so good! These hard working kids raise Green Awareness 2008 to a new level!
The students studied architecture, community planning, development, recycling, and energy use. The participants then designed sustainable neighborhoods made from reused materials: milk cartons, boxes, popscicle sticks, muffin tins, cake covers, etc. They constructed their cities in the Grand Ballroom of the Monona Terrace creating a 10,000 square foot display!
These lovely cities utilize a variety of energy sources: water power, wind power and solar panels. The communities included houses, apartments, schools, hospitals, airports, a capitol building, a stadium, zoos, trains, parks, lakes, water towers, rivers, a dam - everything modern cities need!
When I asked Ashley what she liked best about working on 'Shark City,' she replied:
"The thing I liked best was working together with my friends."
"I liked making my house, and working on the hotel and the fire station."
I asked her what she learned and she shared:
"It's a lot of work to make a city. You have to think about everybody."
"You have to plan things for forever, not just today."
"We have to take care of our lakes and rivers or we'll be in trouble."
"There's lots of ways to make energy and save it."
These kids represent our green future, and they (we) are off to a great start!
