Fishhawk Lake Heron in Bad Weather

It's torrential rains out here at Fishhawk Lake today and NO ONE is out except for our lone Blue Heron. I saw him literally "stumped" hanging out casually on an errant log in the middle of the lake.

Blue Heron on a Log at Fishhawk Lake

Try as I might, I can't seem to get the right camera lens to get a clear shot at him! It's time to invest in a tripod...but anyway....I dutifully put on my raingear and decided to take pictures of him anyway! He is always solo and usually quite shy. Anytime I've raised a camera in his direction, he takes off. Not this time!

He hung out looking rather nonplussed, seeming to be the only living soul in this god-forsaken weather at Fishhawk Lake. (A record for rain in the month of September for Oregon).

He stood still, he scratched, he shifted as the log slowly made its way from one side of Fishhawk Lake to the other.

Anyway, I will never give up trying to get the perfect pose of my favorite bird of all time, The Great Blue Heron of Fishhawk Lake!

Kristin, I can almost say that it was easier taking the photos than getting them inserted in this post!

The heron is my favorite bird, as it reminds me of prehistoric birds, the pterodactyl to be specific, which I fell in love with as a kid. It has the funniest squawking sounds, too when it feels disturbed and takes off in flight.

Hi Gayle,

Persistence pays off and despite the weather, I think this Great Blue Heron has his eyes on you too! Considering the weather conditions, I think your photographs are terrific in all its natural beauty!

The Great Blue Heron is a legendary bird on many waters. They evoke mystery from primeval times. I consider them treasures of the sea. Now that this Great bird knows that you took the risk to admire his beauty and that you mean no harm, I think he'll let you come in for a great camera shot when the weather clears.

We are having quite the Fall storm, aren't we.  I'm kind of digging it...lots of fun watching the wind blow - and the rains come down. And, I painted the little guest bath on Saturda. The house is shining with attention. There is a plus to "indoor" weather. Lol.

Gayle, I love the blue heron!  It is one of my favorite birds as well.  It does look sort of pterodactyl-ish and I agree with Patty that it looks like he is waving at you!  LOL about inserting the picture being harder than taking it.  Very nice post.  As always, love the photos :)

Good pictures.

The last one has some great colors and he looks ready to spear something.
