BlogKnowing HOW To Grow Our Business Was The Easy Part.....

It's the doing it that's challenging.  I think most agents have no trouble coming up with ideas, but things get in the way.  Time, money, knowledge, they can all be stumbling blocks to making that next step up with our business.  And there's always a nice bright shiny thing being offered to grab our attention (and dollars).

We knew blogging was something we SHOULD do long before we ever placed fingers on keyboard.  One of those RE/MAX conventions 5-6 years ago brought it up, we made note "Yeah, we should do that", and promptly DIDN'T.  It's no secret that Internet presence is crucial for those of us without some huge sphere of influence that keeps the referral business going.  We've got to scrap for what's left over when the referral agents have gotten their slice!

So we know this will sound like a blatant try for 1st place in the growing your business contest, but frankly the solution to our Internet presence is right in front of you if you're reading this, and it's blogging AND participating in Active Rain.  We're (no kidding here) having our personal best year ever, and we've still got all of 4th quarter left!

Blogging has done EXACTLY what we hoped, create opportunity.  Now it may not be putting as many dollars in our pocket yet as we expect it to, but the showers are getting stronger as our blog post archive grows larger!  It's creating phone calls, from there it's up to us to turn it into something more.

In 2013, we've had three referral closings from other Rainers (two listings and one buyer).  We've sent referrals out too!  Other benefits of blogging regularly?

  • Thanks to what we've learned here, we've got a chokehold on Google Page 1 for our niche.  It's not all from our blog, as our Pinterest account, Wordpress site and main website unify to give us a pretty good sized digital footprint!
  • Along the way, we're getting training that trumps anything we've found anywhere else.  Chances are whatever we want to know, someone in the Rain has covered it!
  • We've got friends across the country and Canada too!  Help is always just a phone call, email or Facebook message away!
  • Blog enough and the reporters find you!  Nothing national for us, but a Cincinnati magazine and local paper have both provided us exposure!

We're nowhere close to being done growing our business.  We still have PLENTY of neighborhoods to cover, custom IDX searches to create, local events to cover, and maybe a school levy or two to get mixed up in!

Bottom line, blogging has been critical.  The more high quality, consumer facing posts you can write, the better the odds you'll increase your business, so.....

Keep on Blogging!

Brenda, It beats anything else we've tried as far as long term benefits.  We've had some success with direct mail, but we like that a blog post doesn't quit working for us as long as we don't delete it.

I haven't had many inquiries due to blogging, but that's okay. I still haven't passed my first year of business. I'm laying the groundwork for future success

Suzanne, And you've already realized what many bloggers don't, it's a foundation laying process that may take siginficant time to pay off.  The agent directory is crowded with folks that just tossed in a profile, or wrote 10-20 posts and quit because "blogging didn't work".  A lot of digital breadcrumbs needed, but write the right stuff long enough and the calls will start.

Blogging is like the big secret that everybody knows about but does not take advantage of it.  Those that do, reap the cream of the crop (particularly in the long run).

Helen, It's the difference for many between thriving and being out of business entirely.

Charita, It's a long term investment, mostly of time and not money.

Nice job Spears.  I have yet to see actual money in my pocket from blogging, but the current intangibles of it are felt.  The client that came from our website presence mentions that they read our post on .....  That solidifies our clients experience with us.

Matt, Definitely, with that caveat you mentioned.

Jay & Michelle, Give it time and you'll have the extra paying business.  The greater your population density, the better the chances too.  We're in a relatively low population area in our DIRECT market of Warren County, about 200,000 residents.  But immediately adjacent are Cincy and Dayton with millions of people in the related areas, but many of those are outside our practical service area.

I agree with you.  That is why I am not hesitant to share things with other agents that ask.  So few of them will ever follow through on the tips that you give them.

Jill, That's how we see it too.  Lots of posts written as an investment in future business.  Who knows when (or sometimes if) a particular post will cause a call, but the opportunity is created each time we hit submit.

Kerry, There is certainly that element of it!  We all probably have more on our To Do list than we care for, and some of those things in reality will never get done despite best intentions.

Lana, Thanks!  We make a point of showing up every day :)
