We all know Detroit has declared bankrutpcy...thats the whole city mind you. What I read about a hearing before the bankruptcy Judge moved me and infuriated me at the same time. People who had worked for the City from 15-30 years were in danger of NOT getting their pensions. Stop and think about this for one moment
ITS A PROMISE NOT A PRIVILEGE
You work with a promise of a retirement at the end of your agreed too term. You put up with a set pay, long hours, bureaucracy, nonsense and most importantly no social security deductions. You reach the retirement point decade (s) later and then retire. You counted down the hours to this glorious event. WHOOPS...there may not be any money left to pay...WHAT?
PEOPLE BEGGING FOR WHAT IS THEIRS?
It was heartbreaking to have to hear people pleading with the bankruptcy judge to NOT allow the City to escape their promises. Many have no other means of income and I am sure some are in danger of losing their homes too. What kind of system can exisit that takes peoples lives and plays with them like this?
YOU CAN SEE THIS COMING WAY BEFORE IT COMES
I know the City management knew about this many years in advance. I also wont let the Unions off the hook either. From the Senator on down, to the governor (that's a laugh...governing what?), to union reps, local reps etc...You whammied everyone. You got people to spend their lives for free...
YOU GOT 3 MINUTES?
The judge who heard peoples pleas one after another to not allow the City to escape or avoid this by hiding in bankruptcy was so moved that he let people speak beyond their 3 mintes allotted portion. The fact that many refused to sit down until they got it all out probably helped him with his decision...
BACK-UP PLANS
Wherever you live, take a long hard look at the management of your City and the next time re-elections come up, ask questions and demand answers. You can acutally do that now by contacting your City councilman and requesting data. In the end, you better have a back-up plan in these crazy, uncertain times
THE SWORD CUTS BOTH WAYS
The time to do something about someones monies due them is way before it is due not when it is due and you have a story to accompany it. Amazing too if you consider that no excuse is acceptable to the city or county tax assessor, police force, code enforcement and general all out compliance that is demanded from the people of the City and area when they want something.
Pay these people their PENSION...NO GAME...NO TRICKS...NO TALKING...Send them their checks now
