Terrorists and Your Uncle Bob

By
Home Inspector with JRV Home Inspection Services, LLC HOI 394

I bet your wondering what does your uncle have to do with FBI Guyterrorist. Hopefully nothing unless he happens to be working for the FBI. As we have witnessed with way too much frequency, terrorists are not always the smartest or most adept people. It can be said they have just enough skills and knowledge to be dangerous.

And so it may be with your Uncle Bob.

Everyone knows or has an Uncle, friend, sibling, family member who is handy. You need something done around your house, you call this person or perhaps they willfully volunteer their services. This person makes it all sound so very simple. Easy peasy. Things like plans and permits that you in your naïveté thought were necessary, are scoffed at by this self proclaimed skilled artisan.

After being reassured for the 100th time, that this project will be a piece of cake, the task is undertaken. All the while there is a nagging little voice in your head. A slight feeling of unease about the project. Something just doesn't feel right, but you soldier on, constantly assured at every seemingly bad turn not to worry, it'll be fine.

I find it extremely hard to fathom in this time of vast amounts of easily accessible information at ones finger tips, that any project can be done extremely wrong. A little I can understand, but so much so it becomes a comedy. I just don't get it.

Deck stairs

So was the case not long ago with a brand new deck I found during a home inspection. The deck has to be the number one DIY project. They look so deceptively easy to build. What's to know? A few boards here, some nails there, bada bing, bada boom, a deck!

NOT!

Take a close look at the stairway to this new deck. Notice anything odd, off kilter?

The railing is higher at the bottom than the top. Also, a railing hasn't been installed along the opposite side of the stairway.
And that's far from all.

Narrow stair treadThe width of the stairs is too narrow (36" minimum), the stair treads are again too narrow (10" minimum) and not well secured to the stringers. The height of the treads is to high (not to exceed 7 -3/4"). The angle of the stairway is more like a ladder than a set of stairs.
There is word for this, a teardown.

Keep in mind that's just the stairs. The support structure I'll save for another post.

I'd say these stairs as pretty terrifying. But that's just me.

Obviously the money paid to a professional is well worth it. PLUS you get all that time back you spent on the DIY project. DIY is over-rated when it comes to big projects. Changing a light fixture is easy, building a deck is not. I wouldn't go near that deck!

Jim -- those steps remind me of the stairs to the basement in the house we lived in when I was very little (and which my grandparents then moved into after we had moved on.)  Surprising that he didn't put a landing and curve on it to avoid the window.

That is scary to see the rail smaller at the top . . . where the fall is the highest!  D'oh!  I know those Uncles, they do home inspections for buyers too!

Hey, you know the futher things are away, the smaller they look, but the top railing shouldn't look that small.  lol

Great comments, the DIY people can be dangerous, I toured a house a few years ago in the south and the stair slant was to much and narrow.

Jay, I had a deck once where it swayed when were got on to it. Needless to say we all got off fast, yet verrry carfully.

Kathy, I never heard that. Interesting.

Michael, As do most things :)

Clint, There is really nothing wrong with where the stairs are placed, its just that they have been completely built wrong. At the front of the deck, the land falls away steeply. Not a good location for the stairs.

Charlie, Yes it is. What a shame.

Richie, Sounds like fun...not!

Chuck, For sure. As long as there are Uncle Bobs, I will have blog fodder :)

Geoff, I love it!!!

Andrea, Maybe :)

Ed, I'm certain these projects always start with the best of intentions.

Joni, Yep!

Nancy, The man does get around :)

Spencer, Interesting is a word I use a lot :)

Fernando, I think so.

Goran, As I said, that's just the stairs.

Steven, That's a good point. What is your time worth? Everyone's time is worth something. That could be a whole other blog itself.

Trisha, Halloween scary? :)

Kat, That sounds like a very plausible scenario :)

Harry, Most of the time any how.

Steven, A proper railing on the other side would have sufficed.

Gay, So very true.

Carla, I've heard Uncle Bob sometimes moonlights as a home inspector. Very frustrating.

Vicki, Reverse perspective :)

Jack, If the house was old, I can see that, but on a newer building....

Michelle, As they should and as we see with good reason.
