Showcase: Colorado

It all comes down to personal preference. Some people love the ocean, while others are attracted to the desert. The sustained frenzy of a large urban center can have great appeal, or it may be a big sky and an unbroken horizon. Perhaps it comes down to how personal time is spent - a walk in the woods vs. a night at the opera. The choices can be endless or rather limited, but it's how you react to them that determines your ultimate satisfaction with where you live.

I'm lucky to live in Colorado, and even luckier to live in Fort Collins, a town of friendly and tolerant folk who cherish their community and the wide array of lifestyle choices on offer. The tranquility of the wilderness is minutes away, the hustle and bustle of the big city only a bit farther. The energy of the entrepreneurial spirit drives the commercial life of the town, while the university keeps the intellectual juices flowing. People are happy here, and you can feel it everywhere you go.

For me, in addition to all that, there are two things that are special:

I love wrinkled geography and the mountains are my refuge - I'm among them when I can be, and when all I have time for is looking at them, I'm still happy. They're always out there to the west, shining brightly in the morning sun or providing a backdrop for a spectacular sunset. The one in the picture above is Long's Peak, one of our 53 14,000+ footers. It's a fantastic hike to the top - no climbing skills needed.

And I love the climate. We have four legitimate no-excuses seasons, with verdant springs, long summer days, colorful falls, and yes, the snows of winter. Fall and winter are my favorites. I love seeing everything blanketed in white, knowing that in a very few days, it's all going to melt off, only to fall again soon. It doesn't get much better than sitting by the fire with a cup of spiked cocoa and several dogs napping at my feet, reading a good book and watching the flakes drifting down.

Dick -- One of the top places on my list of where I wanted to live when I grew up was Colorado.  I have past clients who live in Ft. Collins and they love it too!  A nice post highlighting all the reasons to love Ft. Collins.

Hey Food Dude, I'm quite certain the Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce will hire you as a tourist brochure writer in the unlikely event you get tired of real estate sales.  I know the mountains have as strong a pull on people as the ocean does other people and as the desert does on others.

I'll resist the temptation to insert a link to your post showing snow on your deck in (was it?) June.

Dick, we also love the mountains. We've been fortunate to visit the Rockies several times. With a stepson in Golden, I think it will be a regular stop for us.

Great Colorado post!  I was in Denver for the Nutcracker ballet and a Broncos game in December 2011.  Happiest memories ... this post made me want to go back.

Kind regards, Tiffany (& Troy, too!)

Dick, I've been to Colorado many times in my past Corporate life on business travel.  I know many people who relocated there.  They love it. I "fear" my son may move there which may mean I reinvent myself as a Colorado Broker

Hi Dick, Congratulations on a great post. Some sell the steak but the talented sell the sizzle and this is the best of the latter.

It certainly is a magnificent area packed with beauty. I Love the pictures and stories you share. i can not wait to visit one day. It sure would be a nice life style. Everything on the east coast is always rush rush so another pace may be nice.

Dick, Mountains are not my favorite view but they are right up there after water. You paint a great picture of life in Colorado.

What a beautiful description of Colorado. You are a very GOOD writer  and made me feel like I was there. You should look into writing as another professional or do more of it in real estate. Colorado is beautiful and some of my friends have just moved there from Florida.

Dick you had me up until you started writing about the white stuff.  It does not melt quickly around here, and since you enjoy it so much, I will let you have our share of it as well :)

I love your first paragraph. It's so true. Everyone's preference is different and how you grew up has a lot to do with what you love.

I'm so happy Roger Mucci pointed me in your direction.  Your eloquent portrayal of your Colorado is more than enticing, even though if I never saw the white stuff again, I'd be happy.  Looking forward to reading more about your world.
