I like the color green.  It's the color of the trees when they're in full bloom, our lawn when there's no water shortage, the name of the place I try to hit my golf ball in one or two shots every time and, last but not least - it's the color of money.  It signifies life and living.  Being green, to me, signifies being ill since I was a kid (she turned green in the face - not good).  Now with everything under the sun being labeled "green" - it's taking on a whole new meaning and life of it's own.  So that I now find myself and my lifestyle as "green" is purely an accident.

We've been composting forever simply because it was a good place to put excess grass clippings and old fruits and vegetables.  I have been adding coffee grounds and egg shells since I did read that was good for the pile.  It's in the very back of our yard and we use it when planting our garden.  Oh, by the way, I guess we're "organic", too because we only use bunny drops and compost for our vegetable/herb garden.  And we have a vegetable/herb garden.  AND we recapture water when it rains in what little buckets/vessels we can to water the gardens.

I'm pretty thrifty (i.e. cheap) when it comes to other things around the house.  For my Real Estate paper work I use the back and front of all paper and I recycle because we have a free recycle bin (we also recycle aluminum, glass and plastic). Any sensitive documents I've always shredded and re-used as bunny bedding.  Schools are always having paper drives, too, so we've sent newspapers there for years to support the schools.

As for the gas guzzling vehicle, I have one of those that I can't live without.  It's literally my office.  But we have a sporty little red '89 Daytona that gets a kazillion miles to the gallon and has no air.  We usually park it for the winter but with gas hitting $3.45 this week, I bet we'll be getting it out in a hurry.  It holds golf clubs and open house signs quite comfortably.

My lifestyle, I guess you could say is "green".  I've just always considered it being resourceful.

I always called it being cheap, and I'm right there with you, girl.  Nice to know we were green when green wasn't cool!

Jodi, good post! The price of gas is getting ridiculous! Thankfully I do drive a "green" machine that is environmentally friendly.

Isn't there a song by that title, Jodie?  "We were green, when green wasn't cool" - It would make a great hit!

Hello Michael:  Ed here:)  I love filling up the red car for about $19 (used to be a little over 10) and driving forever on one tank of gas.  It's a stick shift, too so that really helps.

Hi Ed, it sounds like you've been green all along in the best sense of the word...thrifty, responsible, caring about others including your animals and the earth, and not wasteful.

I remember trying to be green long ago when my son was a baby.  I filled paper grocery sacks with aluminum and plastic and newspapers.  When I took them to the recycle center, they happily took my cans and paper, but said no to the plastic.  It seems that then, not sure about now, that even though you had the right plastic "number" on the bin it wasn't acceptable because it didn't have a neck.   What I was taking them was the baby wipe tubs.  After that, I reclaimed my back porch from the paper bags full of "recyclables".  I'm sure it is much easier now as I see just bins on the sidewalks.  No more sorting needed.  Sadly, in my area, those bins cost me an extra $15 per month.  No thanks.  I'll keep giving my newspapers to the boy scouts.

You shared, " My lifestyle, I guess you could say is "green".  I've just always considered it being resourceful.    "  I olded the last word...what a good point!

Hi Ed - being resourceful - that's the key, and now that word means 'green'.  I suspect many people were 'green' without knowing it, when they read your list.  I'd been doing some of the things you wrote about, but I never thought of them as being green.  These are easy simple tips many people can easily do now, without making many changes at all.

Lola:  Talking about being resourceful with the bunny - with the one it came down to "What are we going to do with all this?" It's not the best for your lawn if it sits out there, so it started going in the gardens.

Hi Kathy:  The bins used to cost us extra each month, too.  So at that time we did like you did and took it to the recycle center.  Now the bins are free, so that helps out - and they're not as picky on the sorting as they used to be.

janeAnne:  I even turn my computer off at night to be "resourceful":)

Gita:  Your welcome.  I know you like Green - since you're in Philly.

Ann:  Thanks for commenting.  It takes very little for everyone to do some small thing to make our environment "green".

I have an open house at Hyde Park from 1 - 3.  And after that I think I'm showing houses.  But if not, I could possibly make it - I'm sure the weather will be great!

Resourceful is definitely 'green' Ed. It's the old-fashioned way my Scottish grandmother taught me about. The old wise ways turn out to be the best after our 'trip' out with consumerism.

Cheers & good for you!

Hi Deborah:  It probably is taught or passed on to me from my family as well.  Along with my husband who grew up on a farm with a rather large family.
