Showcase - Washington "The Evergreen State"
Rugged appeals to me, in people, design, and places. Wild, natural, and beautiful - all at once. It’s probably why the Pacific Northwest is the place where I feel at home. Specifically, in a small town across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon called Camas.
Camas is actually located in Washington State, also known as the Evergreen State. With lush green forests blanketing much of the western side, it’s aptly named. Camas also sits near the mouth of the famous Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
Rugged outdoor adventures are always just minutes away - wind surfing, kayaking, sailing, fishing, and hiking, to name a few. We’re about one hour away from year-round skiing on Mt. Hood, two hours to the beach, and roughly three hours to the high desert.
If the big city calls your name, Portland is minutes away with great dining, shopping, theater, arts, or people watching weirdness - “put a bird on it.” Three hours to the north ( by car) is beautiful Seattle ( one of my favorite cities). Home to Starbucks, and our region’s obsession with coffee.
Great coffee, handcrafted brews, and delicious wines are all produced here. They make great pairings for our abundance of fresh and local foods. Some of the most well-known of that lot; wild salmon, dungeness crab, and other “just pulled from the sea” offerings.
Camas has plenty of small-town charm. People get to know one another rather quickly, and the emphasis is generally on family and community. We seldom have to endure a traffic jam, unless we’re trying to get across one of the bridges into Oregon.
For me, the appeal will always be in the terrain and easy proximity to the mountains, water, and trails. Big mountains and big water are centering - it’s kind of hard to hang on to your worries when the vastness of Mother Nature puts things back into perspective for you.
