One of the many great things about the metro Atlanta area is the access to a top notch, world class baseball organization the Atlanta Braves Website!

For those of us who are not quite Major League Baseball caliber, the metro Atlanta area offers many local baseball and softball outlets for all skill levels. With this blog, I am going to highlight some (not all) of these local opportunities. You will be able to click on images and hyperlinks to access more information.

First up would be the City of Atlanta's Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs whose general page can be accessed by clicking this image City of Atlanta's Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs We are fortunate to have a Department of Recreation within the larger Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs. This specialized department is charged with enhancing the life of residents through nationally recognized recreation programs and activities; this includes a variety of recreation from aquatics to afterschool recreational activities. The City of Atlanta currently has 348 parks that are either maintained by the city and/or volunteer organizations. There are a total of 85 ballfields in 57 of Atlanta's parks. For more specific information on city athletics contact Biana Hill, Recreation Program Director for athletics by phone at 404-817-6852 or via e-mail at bdhill@atlantaga.gov. If you would like specific info on senior programs for the City of Atlanta contact Diallo Robertson, Recreation Program Director Seniors/Therapeutics by phone at 404-817-6934 or via e-mail at dkrobertson@atlantaga.gov.

If softball, both fast pitch and slow pitch, is your thing, then metro Atlanta has definitely got what you are looking for. The recognized major nationwide organization is Amateur Softball Association This is a wonderful organization that is well represented in the State of Georgia. In addition to hosting local leagues for all levels of play, there are numerous tournaments that are sanctioned by the ASA. If you are the umpire type, well ASA has you covered there with training programs for new umpires (a.k.a. blues) and veterans! Softball has something for everyone!

If you have little ones, boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 18, who are new to baseball or who have played before, the recognized nationwide leader is Little League Baseball and Softball This phenomenal organization has been introducing young players to the sports of baseball and softball since it was founded in 1939 and "granted Federal Charter July 16, 1964, by unanimous act of the Senate and House of Representatives of the Congress of the United States of America and signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson." The Little League Network in Georgia include 10 Divisions that are further broke down by locality. Rather than listing only the metro Atlanta divisions, HERE is a link to the statewide divisions and links to each! I am proud to point out the the Warner Robbins Little League Team won the 2007 Little League World Series!

Linda - Thanks for the compliment! I enjoyed yours as well!

Debbie - I really enjoy doing localism posts, I learn as much doing the research sometimes as the readers do from the actual post! Sports and exercise are important for both kids and adults! Had to include the 2007 World Series Champs as it is a big deal to both the area and the players!

Kim - Thank you! Sports and the parks department play a big role in the quality of life of any local community. I am happy to do my part to promote them!

Rich, this is a great post. I like how it wraps it all into one nice package and adding the little league world champions to it is the bow on that package. Great job again.

I'm a big fan of little league and I just signed up to be the coach of my son's baseball team tonight and my daughter's softball team last week. We are lucky to have the world series of Baseball and Softball here on a very regular basis and the kids really get to see the excitement of a big game.

Todd - I agree that the benefits to youngsters from playing organized sports are numerous and will serve them well in later life. I hope that this contest will highlight not only the major and minor league teams around the country, but the local/community softball and baseball opportunities for everyone from kids to adults! I really believe that local sports add value to communities.
