What does beef have to do with a mortgage??

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Christiansen Group Realty (260)704-0843

I was almost in tears earlier when one of my team members shared this conversation with me:

Fred (My team member):  Thank you for calling Century 21 Bradley.  How can I help you?

Buyer:  I am considering buying a home and I need some help.

Fred:  I can do that!  Tell me a little bit about what you are looking for.

Buyer:  (Tells Fred about area, home, etc.)

Fred:  All of that sounds great!  Is it okay if I ask you a couple of questions?

Buyer:  Sure!

Fred:  Are you currently working with any other Realtors?

Buyer:  No.

Fred:  What is your time frame?  How soon do you need to move?

Buyer:  ASAP.

Fred:  Do you have a home to sell first?

Buyer:  No.

Fred:  Great!  Have you talked to a lender about getting approved for a loan?

Buyer:  Yup!  I am approved for a loan.

Fred:  Even better!  What type of loan?

Buyer:  A straight up regular loan.

Fred:  Ha.  Okay.  Like an FHA loan?

Buyer:  Hm.  I'm not really sure.  It was something like that.  It had some letters in it.  I don't remember if it was FHA or not.

Fred:  VA maybe?  Are you or were you in the military?

Buyer:  No.  I'm not military, but it did have letters in it.  I can't remember.

Fred:  Was it a USDA loan?

Buyer (Completely serious): WHAT DOES BEEF HAVE TO DO WITH A MORTGAGE??? USDA-loans-in-Fort-Wayne

Fred and I laughed for at least 5 minutes!

This is one of the things I love about selling real estate.  You never EVER know what's around the corner.  It's stories like this that keep things interesting, and keep things going.

Fred was more than happy to help this buyer get educated on different types of loans.  Sometimes real estate lingo can get confusing, even for us professionals!

Thank you for sharing with your hilarious conversation with me Fred.  Hopefully this buyer will buy a home, and not a bunch of USDA Choice Beef instead!

Amanda and Jared, now that's funny! I was hoping this one would have a good punch line and it certainly did.

That was a catchy title!  I'm sure the buyer knows now what USDA means.  Well, we still have a lot of acronyms and real estate terms that may confuse home buyers and we're here to explain to them what they mean.

It is most logical and even today when I see it I have the same reaction. We are programmed to associate things familiar to us. It is funny though!!

You know, every time I mention a USDA loan, I get some sort of comment about the government, or food, or something.   Nothing quite as funny as that though, but there sure is a lot of confusion on what the USDA could possible have to do with homes!

Great story Amanda and Jared. Sometimes when we're throwing out our industry acronyms we forget that buyers have no clue what we are talking about. One of our agents always markets herself with GRI after her name. I can't tell you how many times over the years we've received calls asking to speak with Mrs. GRI.

Very funny, but government did solve this problem by way of the shutdown and the buyer wouldn't need to ask that question today.  USDA loans are officially offline while Congress does its thing....

Hahaha...the poor guy. He has no clue. Glad Fred was able to help him understand what kind of loan he was approved for.

I'm glad everybody is getting a kick out of this.  Everytime I read it I continue to laugh!

To those of you that reminded all of us that the government is still shut down and USDA loans are at a stand still...  Yes.  We know.  Hopefully all of this will end soon.  This post was intended to be light hearted and fun, not political.

Too funny, Jared.  That thought has run through my mind a few times, but I haven't had anyone pick up on it.

A great story! I kept thinking you were going down the road of asking "where's the beef?" I've used USDA loans very successfully with clients who qualified and didn't need to put money down. Unfortunately, the number of areas in our region that qualify for USDA loans have shrunk considerably over the past 10 years.

USDA Prime loans are tied to the prime interest rate.

I own some land in New Mexico in open range land.  Beef cattle from the neighbor's ranch roam the area and eat the grass on my land.  I have tried to explain to the cattle that I am the land owner, but they ignore me.  I think maybe they only speak Spanish.  La vaca loca.

Too funny! I'm going to guess it's an FHA instead of a USDA-I think that buyer would have remembered those letters.
