Montgomery County, MD Impacted by Massive Furloughs

The uncertainty that is being experienced by thousands of government employees that have been furloughed by the federal shutdown will have a major impact on spending patterns and the area economy. There are eighteen federal agencies and installations located in Montgomery County, Maryland and very large number of government contractors that rely on federal funding.  Over 70,000 Montgomery County residents work for the federal government.

One of the major federal agencies in Gaithersburg is the National Institute of Standards and Technology. News reports indicate that only 6,000 of their 46,000 employees will be kept on duty.  In Silver Spring, The Food and Drug Administration has furloughed 45% of its 13,000 member work force.  Some credit unions have announced that they will allow partial payments or skipped payments for furloughed employees. It is too soon to know the number of families that will need assistance when pay checks are missed.

Will the federal shutdown impact real estate transactions? The simple answer is yes.

The government shutdown effects everything.  Even websites that we need - it is a sad situation by irresponsible Congresspeople.

I have to agree with Joanne. It's a sad situation by irresponsible Congressmen and women. And us, we voted them in there!

Good morning Roy.  Your last sentence summed it up well.  YES the shutdown will affect us all in one way or the other.  I had a couple of calls from panicked buyers yesterday wanting to make sure they were going to be able to close on time.

Roy,

That is quite an impact.  My suggestion is that those involved in this crazy debacle contribute from their continuing paychecks big time...A

Thank you very much for your feedback. Let's hope that voters will remember the names of the members of congress that caused this unnecessary shutdown of the federal government. We could use some fresh faces in the leadership.

Just read your post regarding how the govt shut down has affected cancer patients in clinical trials- this is such a shame , mean while both sides of  the aisle will continue to receive they pay checks .  Whats wrong with that picture.....

Roy, these are staggering numbers. That no doubt will impact the local economy.  Glad to see the credit unions making humane efforts.  However, if this continues too long the credit union could be in serious trouble.  Hope they have enough cash reserve.

When you allow the government to get to big and to corrupt you can only expect the worst. The D C area has gone up in value more than anyone else because it relies on government. We cannot keep living this way.

Roy - it would seem only fair that those who cannot manage to get their act together, donate their paycheck to those who have been furloughed.
