Cancer Treatments Put on Hold at NIH

The federal shutdown has created a life threatening situation for many cancer patients that come to Montgomery County, Maryland as they seek treatment at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda.  Every week, hundreds of patients are admitted to new clinical trials at NIH.

Patients are now being told that they must wait until the government starts up again to begin their trials. About 14,700 people have been furloughed at NIH. This means that about 75% of the employees are not at work due to inability of members of the House of Representatives to take the necessary action to fund government agencies.

Some may consider this to be a rant. It is difficult for me to imagine the feelings of the patients that are not being treated.

Roy,

This is horrible. As a cancer survivor, I know that the added stress is not good for the patients. The government should stop acting like kids and start compromising. No one, or should I say...party can get everything they want. This is just life. The sooner they learn to negotiate the better for everyone. The people should revolt and fire every member of congress and senate.

Roy - the government could easily not shut down NIH, there is an offer to keep it funded, but our administration is hoping to exploit every opportunity to make a political gain.

Did you hear this guy respond "why would we want to do it?"

So, it is purely political, and purely ooportunistic. The worst thing for congress would be to succumb to pure p[olitical pressure. They need to do what is right for the country, not only today but also tomorrow, and this takes courage when everybody is calling them names.

Outrage is not the answer. We should not play dirty political games, and this is what the administration is trying to do here.

It is unthinkable that the future of people already stressed to the limit with a so often unrelenting disease is in the hands of people whose concerns are purely political.  Whatever happened to a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Roy,  This is unimaginable.  The true impact of the shut down cannot be calculated. So many are negatively impacted ... it is more than just a shut down.

I don't care what political party you support, I don't know anyone that thinks our elected officials are truly serving those that elected them.

Which agencies to shut down and which to continue funding was and is totally discretionary and any agency shut down can be reversed by a stroke of the pen by the President of the U.S.

It is he and he alone who picks and chooses which agencies continue to be funded.  Or, who lives and who dies.

These so-called leaders have the best possible health care and are responsible for people who are in dire need of assistance getting nothing. They are making this country look ridiculous to the rest of the planet. They are NOT leaders!

My heart aches for these people who have this added stress on top of having to have cancer treatments in the first place.  How very sad for all of them.  Obama should be ashamed of himself......this wouldn't be happening if it applied to him or a member of his family.

MY BLOOD IS BOILING over the stupidity of the politicians who have forgotten WHO they represent (us the people). Closing open air monuments is one thing but cancer patients and children? They have crossed the line.  If teh president can find 100's of millions just loast week to send over seas to Syria, take it back and fund the hospital and the needs of OUR people.

This "shutdown" is only being exercised where it will visibly and painfully affect the general population.  I'm speechless over this one.
