Cancer Treatments Put on Hold at NIH
The federal shutdown has created a life threatening situation for many cancer patients that come to Montgomery County, Maryland as they seek treatment at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. Every week, hundreds of patients are admitted to new clinical trials at NIH.
Patients are now being told that they must wait until the government starts up again to begin their trials. About 14,700 people have been furloughed at NIH. This means that about 75% of the employees are not at work due to inability of members of the House of Representatives to take the necessary action to fund government agencies.
Some may consider this to be a rant. It is difficult for me to imagine the feelings of the patients that are not being treated.
