4 Steps to selecting a Realtor

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Results

So often consumers feel like real estate agents are not helpful in the real estate buying process, but only slow it down. They do have a point, as some agents do not service their clients well, and even make them feel that they are being to picky, or taking too long to make a buying decision. There is truth to that thought.....National statistics say that people are researching a home purchase for as much as 12-18 months in advance, on average it is about 6 to 8 months of "internet" shopping before they buy.

In addition to the "browsing time" issue, is another more weighty issue. Most people truly need a strong Agent when they sell or purchase a home, but sometimes they are not sure why. The reason "why" to that question is better to be addressed in another article, but it is an overview of the logic is simple: Do travelers want discount pilots to fly their planes, or how about a conveniently priced surgeon? Not all agents make all transactions go better, or smoother, but knowing how to avoid, and what to do if difficulties do arise.

When making large buying or selling decisions it is vitally important that you choose a Realtor, that not only has some relevant experience, but also puts you and your concerns at ease.  They need to breath confidence and competence into the process.

  • Is this agent active in the community with deep roots (Church, School/Parent Boards, or even Community Action)
  • Does this agent have a strong grasp of the current pricing trends, relevant technology and different mortgage products?
  • How do you feel when they are talking with you? Do you feel like they "heard you" or do you feel like they are talking down to you, or not paying attention to your real needs?
  • Do you feel as if they are just telling you what you want to hear, and not their honest opinion?

Here is the point, ladies and gentlemen - If you are uncomfortable at the beginning of the process with who you are working with, you will most likely be much more uncomfortable by the end of the process. Having an agent send you a few listings, do a market analysis on your house should not "earn" them the right to your trust.

Your selection should not be the "path of least resistance", it should be intentional and purposeful. If it does not feel right.... make up your mind to not "settle" - you deserve better!

Shalom,

Stieg Strand

Stieg-Matching clients with service providers is always a guessing game in the beginning. Are the personalities compatible, is the service professional competent- and of course this is not just for REALTORS. Same issues for physicians, dentists, accountants, etc.
