Craigslist Ads being Flagged!!!

Someone is flagging my real estate ads on Craigslist.  3 out of 5 ads were flagged yesterday.  I believe it is my competition successfully having my ads removed.  I hired someone to post ads and she brought this to my attention last night.  Is anyone else having this problem?  They can keep flagging my ads and I'll keep putting them up.

49 Comments on Craigslist Ads being Flagged!!!

As far as I know, I haven't had this problem, but I haven't checked either. How are you notified that they are being flagged? And what is the accusation?

YUP!! Same issue. That isn't a whole lot you can do.  Just keep on posting.  I would try contacting Craig's list & see if they can help. Not sure if they can!

03/13/2008 03:37 PM by Joe Gonzalez - 1st Metropolitan Mortgage

sorry to hear that. I hope it is not other real estate agent....

03/13/2008 03:54 PM by Irina Fernandez (John L Scott)

Wow This is really not very nice at all. I wonder if there is any way to trace this back?

Make sure you aren't violating the Terms of Use.  I see a lot of agents ads that are... I have one myself that is questionable... probably a violation, but not as flagrant as many others.  I have been flagged twice, but never the one that is pushing the rules.

Brian, Can you tell me how you know you are being flagged.  I have a former associate who would do something like this.  I have signs that continually go missing in a particular neighborhod where she lives and I know it is her, just can't prove it.  I never check up on my ads in Craigslist, so I have no idea if I am being flagged.  What goes around, comes around, as they say... not sure exactly what it means, but I hope it's true for agents who are this small minded.

I had a post flagged last week - it's frustrating not to know the reason why the post was flagged. I received an email telling me the post was and that was all. Nothing more. No reason. If you can take the time to tell me I've been flagged, take the time to tell me why.

You know, about half the time I try to post to Craig's list (not just real estate related ads) it doesn't 'take.'  I keep trying and nothing....Then a couple weeks later it works.  To my knowledge I haven't ever been flagged.

03/13/2008 09:54 PM by JenRan Realty, LLC

I have been flagged one time. They give no reason for it at all. I just keep reposting. Nothing much you can do about it. Don't let them get to you. Just re-post again.

03/13/2008 10:14 PM by Brenda Sprankel, Calabasas - Simi Valley Realtor (Rodeo Realty, Calabasas Branch)

They click the flag button on the ad.  To notify me, they send an email telling me the ad has been flagged and taken down.  No ads were flagged yesterday!

I had a real estate agent actually call me and told me that I should not be listing in NC since I was in N. Georgia and was really very nasty and hung up on me and she had Craig List make me remove it....so watch out in NC....really very sad huh!

people can be very petty, They will get what is coming to them in the end

It is awful that someone would behave in that way. I guess that I need to read the Terms of Use again. I would think that Craigslist would have some way of preventing someone from maliciously doing this.

It's happen to me before and I wasn't violating any rules!

03/15/2008 03:47 PM by D. Bass ~ Blog: Ask The Underwriter (Alpha Mortgage Training)

Hi Brian, the has been happening to me. It's frustrating due to the time invovled. I have not violated any of the terms either. I simple continue to keep re-posting them. Hopefully the deleting will stop. Good Luck!

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for the 'heads up.'  I've learned about Craigslist since joining AR, and plan to post my ads.  It will be interesting to see how they are received!

03/15/2008 04:24 PM by Laurie Logan-South Central WI Real Estate (RE/MAX Preferred - Broker Manager)

I have been flagged once on Craigslist.  My headlines now usually start with "Realtor listed."  I know some of the Realtors try to disguise that fact.  I just put it right out front now and I haven't been flagged since.

If you have someone who flags your ads who is a competitor I wouldn't worry you will prevail if you keep doing the right thing.

I have had a couple flagged, and never did figure out the reason.  I know that at least once was another agent in the area.....  Keep posting!

i recommend using an autoposter

03/17/2008 01:37 AM by

I've checked out autoposer.  Have you been using this program recently?  I know Craigslist has made a few changes in the past few weeks making it harder to post ads.

03/17/2008 09:34 AM by Brian Kreick (Connect Realty)

I saw an article-although I didn't read all of it, but Craig's List was involved in some sort of law suit regarding discriminatory adds-they were found not liable-maybe this has something to do with you being flagged.

03/17/2008 11:36 PM by Penny Florence (Keller Williams-Salt Lake City)

BRIAN:  Thanks for the wake up call.  I havn't heard of this problem yet. I hope it stops for you soon.

I have used craigslist for everything from buying my car to renting my house. I have bought and sold TONS of stuff as well; but what I have realized is that there seems to be people who have nothing better to do than sit around all day and flag posts on craigslist! No rhyme or reason. Craigslist is a great place to find things and wonderful to advertise FOR FREE.....but their "flagging" system stinks. You can be flagged for no valid reason and nothing you can do about it. Too many evil people with too much time on their hands! I bet it is one of your competitors who is getting no business at all sitting home drinking HATERADE!! LOL......keep posting!!

Wow,  this is really strange.

Brian I haven't had that problem with posting on Craigslist in the past but it seems that some inconsiderate unethical person - someone having nothing better to do (like Valerier above said) -  a competitor - or an owner of a home that's also for sale in the area (another competitor) ....whoever it is I am sorry they are so miserable. and so glad you won't let them get you down. btw Valerie's comment -"HATORADE" - Good one Valerie - (grin)

Flagging depends on the sensitivity of your community. We were flagged too. Make sure you use HTML flyers sparingly.

03/20/2008 09:14 PM by Prudential Locations (Prudential Locations LLC)

I have had a lot of trouble with craigs list too with my ads being flagged I was only placing 2 ads a day and all my ads would be flagged and now I can not even get 1 ad to show up that is a shame for competitors to be so cut throat I believe if the ad is in the right category and not spam they should not be flagged especially by a competitor

03/20/2008 09:57 PM by Makea Turner (Coldwell Banker)

I do not post much on Craigs List. I have tried rentals a few times but not been flagged.

03/22/2008 07:14 AM by GITA BANTWAL, REALTOR BUCKS COUNTY, PA HOMES (ReMax Centre Realtors)

Hi Brian,

I haven't had the problem. Is the flag coming directly from Craig's List? If so, contact them and ask why you are being flagged. One would expect them to at least give you a general idea in the notification memo.

03/22/2008 07:19 AM by Harold (Hal) Place (A1 Connection Realty, Inc.)

Brian, Someone did that to me under financial so I know how you feel.  Now because it kept getting flagged it is harder for me to post ads on Craigslist.

03/22/2008 07:37 AM by My Favorite Mortgage.net - Matthew J Blum

Brian,

I take care of most of the marketing for my real estate company. There is someone who has been flagging our adds as of very recenly and they are literally online all the time. We have an idea of who it may be and know it is a competitor. He emailed us separately as well (anonymously) charging us with all types of things. We did some reasearch to find out advertising requirements by the DRE and have since adjusted our adds to comply (most agents do not comly if you learn the ad guildelines they are pretty rigid actually). Anyway, agent is still flagging them. Guess he thinks this will run our business into the ground. It certainly is frustrating we may take the matter to Ebay (owners of Craigslist) and to the DRE.

Know how your feeling but must be because you have been successful. Lot of jealous people out there with nothing else to do with their time.

I put 3 ads for my services up there, and 2 were flagged.  I wasn't getting any response anyway, so it wasn't a big deal but it still ticked me off.  Do members do it or craigslist staffers?

Brian: I have not noticed this at all. Maybe I need to watch a little closer.

Hey Guys, if you having  problems with Craigslist ads or some one flagging you off, i will sugest you get the tools you need from http://www.powerpostings.com

07/04/2008 09:46 AM by Brandom

Brian: I've written about this before - my ads were getting flagged too and I agree, it comes down to the sensitivity of your community.  Craigslist doesn't do anything.  Hey, it's free! is the attitude  Just keep posting if you have the energy.

Here's a new twist - I'm getting spam e-mail even before my ad is published!  That's kind of scary!Craigslist seems to be working for some people, not for others.  Alyce Martin, Keller Williams Realty/Albuquerque

I haven't had this happen yet but there is an agent in my office I wouldn't put it past.  She has an unhealthy obsessiveness about everything I do.  I keep hoping she will just take care of her own business & I honestly can't believe she has the time to disect everything I do the way that she does.  If she sees this post she'll probably find some reason (maybe just pettiness) to flag my Craigslist ads.

This is the main problem with Craigslist as far as I'm concerned.  I would just keep putting them back up if I were you and maybe whoever is doing it will get tired of it and leave you alone.

I checked out the link mentioned "powerpostings.com" and found the following:
CRAIGSLIST AD FLAGGER:
What would you say if I told you there was a tool so incredibly powerful, so exclusive, that it could flag off a Craigslist advertisement, no matter who originally posted it? I know what you're thinking, this is too good to be true. But it is true. I don't have to tell you how powerful a tool like this is. Just imagine, the ability to clear out a section of craigslist and keep your ads visible and generating traffic. Please do not abuse it by flagging ads simply for the entertainment value. Doing so does not serve any viable purpose short of causing ill-will within the craigslist community, which is not the purpose of this site.

Am I misreading this???  Read the bold statement again.  Looks like software that will flag postings so that you can keep your posings visible.  I would venture to say this is the culprit.

07/09/2008 09:19 PM by Gregory Lohr (Freedom Foreclosure Prevention Services)

If that is really from an agent, that's one big kid who just shouldn't be in this business.

The only thing you can really do is try to send an email to craigslist and let them know that your post are being flagged for no apparent reason.  See what happens, if not, just keep reposting it over and over again until this looser gives up

07/09/2008 11:08 PM by Andy Park (Weichert Realtors FH Realty)

I use Craig's list and was told that you can only post twice a week - so if you post daily it might flag you -

07/10/2008 07:33 AM by Norma J. Elkins (Coldwell Banker Realty House)

That's very common on Craigslist. They are very very verrry picky. Posting on craigslist is a whole industry in itself. I made a little Squidoo page on this subject so maybe this will help.

How to sell on Craigslist without getting banned

07/10/2008 09:54 AM by Carlos "The Card Guy" Scarpero- www.ItsAboutResults.com (SendOutCards)

Craigslist is one of the most finicky options out there. I have properties that I want to advertise in several different markets - all in different states. But if I post in one, it won't let me post the same thing in an entirely different market.

And I've also had things flagged...and I believe it is competition. Probably the same people that steal my directional signs! As best as I can tell from reading the boards, there is nothing to prevent someone from doing this. I know a lot of people say they get business from Craigslist...but it's never worked for us.

Has anyone ever actually been able to TALK to anyone at Craigslist and ask about this?

07/11/2008 12:43 AM by Christine Loschiavo, AZ Realtor (Chandler, AZ West USA Revelation)

Craigslist is a great resource for buying or selling anything, including homes.  I have used it several times and have never been flagged.  I would contact Craigslist directly and explain the problem you are having.  Perhaps they can do something to help.

07/11/2008 05:49 AM by Troy Erickson (Terra Solis Realty, LLC)

These are attacks that come from clflaggers.org.  People use it to get ads removed that they don't like.  The sys makes it look like many people have flagged the ad.  CL needs to come up with a different system

Tell me it's not true Brian! I enjoyed your Blog. I have been putting ads on Craigslist for a couple of months and being in the Tacoma market place I haven't been bothered yet and I have been getting results. Hang in there...

I use craigslist and I have never had one flagged.  There should be someone overseeing the site and not allowing an ad flagged without a legititmate reason
