"Business is Life?" Business is part of my Life? The Whole Me?

I was at Starbucks this morning having coffee with an associate of mine. This associate had just told me that she was tired and moving to Mexico. Then came the following: "Not make a living but actually live." After giving this some thought, I realized that, she was saying she spends all her time trying to make a living and forgets to actually live. My associate is not alone in this matter. So here is the question: Is Business life? or Is business a part of life? or The whole you drives everything? Some of us are very good at separating the two. Some of us are very good at always being in business mode. How many of us have identified the "whole you" and incorporated this into every aspect of life. I would argue that you can be the same someone all the time with tremendous results. Why then are some people like my associate not alive at work but making a living? The answers are unlimited. I will not go into detail on my opinion. I urge each and everyone of you to give this some thought and let me know what you think. I am excited to digest your answers so we may help others start actually living.

Very good post.  I am 100% guilty of spending too much time with work, work and more work.  I love my job and have a hard time shutting it down.  Between 60-70 hours a week, it is imbedded in me.  The only time I really shut down is when I am golfing, scuba diving, or fishing, time gets short on that.  I am going to make more time this year.

Thanks Kim I appreciate the feedback. I had said in Real Estate and Parenting barriers have to be established. Clients choose to work with you the person not the company. If you establish firm barriers clients understand and further their respect for you. Real Estate is hard to turn off because it is relational and relational people love it. It is who we are and I don't think this is bad.

I am a victim of "business is life". I really noticed it when I started to dream about my loans. I often feel guilty when I am away from work or on vacation as all I can think about it how I could be working. I love what I do and honestly....I love having a career that I can work this hard at. The more effort I put into it, the more I get out of it. Everyone has a vice or two...mine are my career (really all aspects of real estate), sugar and shoes. :)

Dreaming about loans or work is definately over the top. I think that we are all guilty. It is the only way to get the shoes though:)
