Okay, this green thing is getting some energy. I have never made the time or energy to seriously pursue a hobby. I am a so-so quilter and slightly better at crochet. I have recently decided with great reluctance to give up the quilting as much for issues of storage and space as anything else and make a serious pursuit of yarn play. To that end, I picked up a knitting magazine the other day. To my amazement, on page 26 there is an article entitled END THE ADDICTION TO OIL, FUEL THE ADDICTION TO KNITTING. The author proceeds to write about how knitwear can help save the planet. While she admits that it might only be a small step, the cumulative result can be huge. Check out http://www.knitnstyle.com
Her message, of couse is that you can turn down the thermostat and put on a sweater. Preferably one handknit from natural rather than acrylic (a petroluem product) yarn. Afghans may soon be back in style. (Craig, can you stage a homey family room for me with an afghan or two causually tossed over an easy chair??? Maybe with some reading glasses and a copy of War and Peace?)
On a more serious note, it is true that natural fibers can keep you comfortable and warm at home. With properly sized and ducted heating systems coupled with good insulation and passive solar design Big Oil can beheld at bay. Swaters, fun socks and slippers can offer comfort, warmth and savings.
