There is a posting associated with the former President Carter that challenges Christians to re-evaluate their Christianity if they don't reach out to the poor. As Mr Carter was a poor president, he is an even worse biblical scholar.
Jesus was very clear that we will have the poor with us always (Matt 26.11). He does encourage others to feed the poor and to give to the poor (Matt 25:37-40/Matt 19:21). He never did say, every person who has income is responsible for the poor. Taking care of the poor is a voluntary act of compassion by anyone and everyone who chooses to do so, but there are two levels of poor people in our country.
The poor who are disabled or unable to provide for themselves should be assisted by those who are willing to assist them. That is a very Christian act.
The poor who are poor by choice should receive nothing from anyone. It is not an act of compassion to funnel money to the guy who refuses to work, but is sitting on his sofa watching his 42" widescreen TV while he sticks a needle in his arm, talking on his Obama phone, collecting food stamps and welfare. Scripture is clear, "The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” 2 Thes 3.10. That is actually an act of compassion, not an enabling act.
The Bible is clear about how the Christian community should approach the poor. It is also clear about how the Christian community should approach those who are frauds, liars, thieves and lazy. If Mr Carter would venture down that path, he would be surprised to learn how the American welfare system has encouraged and increased the failure of healthy men and women who could be contributors if they followed a biblical worldview, but with a man-made socialist worldview, they simply become leeches on the state.
Mr Carter, in his continuing ineptitude, shows that he not only knows nothing about governing, but he also knows nothing about Scripture.
Liberals like to quote Biblical text when it suits them. they almost always take it out of context, which is the only way they can support their beliefs.
Carter with his run-away inflation did more to hurt the poor than about any other adminstration.
Reality is that the Bible says we have an individual obligation to help the poor and our "neighbor" . It also says the Church has an obligation as well. Jesus had little positive to say about government and did not expect the Romans or even the political leaders of Israel to provide for the poor.
When Carter dies, I hope they cremate him and scatter his ashes over The Panama Canal.
That's the same look on his face he had on TV when he was wearing his cardigan in a 68F White House telling us we all had a "maways," and to get to work ... some things never change.
What? Carter's face is gone? Now nobody will understand my comment! Who removed Carter's face?
It's classic. Again, some things never change.
Jay...obviously Mike removed my comment saying that the above post is incorrect. Carter never said it...but, as usual, the truth doesn't matter to some folks.
Actually I didn't think you had removed it.
But, my comment did inspire me to write a post on maways!
I was traveling last Tuesday visiting grandchildren all over the country (I had a post about three generations watching the Redskins game) and did not get to my Tuesday quote.
But I did write it elsewhere. You'll love the last line:

Karl, I did remove your previous comments because it was typical liberal gibberish. If you bothered to read the blog rather than spew your own rant, you would have seen that I said the Facebook post was associated with Carter. I didn't say he definitively said it, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. It sounds like something a pompous pseudo-religious person would say.
I find it amazing that a person who disagrees with a left wing thinker is always a ranter, a hater, a racists, etc, and yet the left consistently emotes the most vociferous hatred and poision than any other group. Jimmy Carter would easily have been the worst president ever if Barak Obama hadn't been elected. Oh yeah, I voted for Carter. That was the last time I voted out of ignorance rather than research.
Uh huh...I notice that the title of this mess is "Jimmy Carter Steps in it Again."
Isn't there something in the bible about bearing false witness?
But what I really find amusing is this, "The poor who are poor by choice..." Tell that to the 20 million children in American that are below the poverty line.
22% of all children In US live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level – $23,550 a year for a family of four. Most of these children have parents who work, but low wages and unstable employment leave their families struggling. Poverty is the single greatest threat to children’s well-being...effective public policies – to make work pay for low-income parents and to provide high-quality early care (that most repubs do not support) can make a difference.
I wonder what Jesus would say about the richest country this planet has ever known that is so indifferent, and in some cases outright hostile, to children (and thier family's) in poverty....
