Now that warmer temps are here, more people are wanting to get outside to escape the cabin fever that becomes prevalent in winter. Hiking is one of Lake Norman's great past times. Here are some hikes you shouldn't miss:

News at Norman reports that The Catawba Lands Conservancy is leading a group of free tours into otherwise closed off lands around Lake Norman. This is a one time opportunity that should not be missed! Space is limited - registration is required. Register at or 704.342.3330 x210. Registration concludes at 2 p.m. the day prior to the hike or lecture. Click News at Norman link for more info on all hikes.

  • We’re Talking Turtles — Monday, March 17, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mecklenburg County, Davidson College
  • A Walk On The Wildflower Side— Saturday, April 5 Mecklenburg County, All Levels
  • Laurel Hill Hike — Saturday, April 26, 10 a.m. to Noon Gaston County, Moderately Strenuous
  • Killian Forest Owl Prowl — Friday, May 9, 7 to 9 p.m. Lincoln County, Gaston County, All Levels
The Carolina Thread Trail is an initiative involving 15 counties in North Carolina to preserve natural lands and improve the quality of life. Click the link to look at some amazing pictures. Lake Norman State Park features trails, too:
  • The Alder Trail: The trail crosses the picnic area, circles the peninsula between Norwood and Hicks creeks, and then skirts the edge of the lake.
  • Lake Shore Trail: The trail passes the boat launch and family campground as it winds along the lake shore.
  • Itusi Trail: Hiking: Hikers are allowed on the Itusi Trail, although hikers must yield to mountain bikers using this trail.
