What Do You Do About A Hacked Twitter Account?

You've probably got a Twitter account, even if you don't actively use it.  It's one of the big social media platforms we're all told to be on.  Let's say you've been online a while and have a few followers.  You publish your blogs, do a few tweets, life is good.  Until you get hacked and it all just...disappears.  What do you do?  What recourse do you have?

My Account Got Hacked

My Twitter account was accessed by someone through identity theft.  They hijacked an email account, reset the password, and deleted my entire Twitter history.  OH NO!!  Is this the end of the world?  Have I just lost tons of social media mojo because my account disappears?  Not really.  The people who followed you before will follow you again if you just publish the articles you did before.  Build your content back up and the followers you had will return.

The first place you need to go to try and recover is the Hacked Account page on Twitter.  If you still have access to your email account, this will help.  If not, consider the account lost.  The good news is that if you really way to track someone down who hacked your account, it can be done by reporting it.

Reporting Identity Theft and Cyber Crime

If you want to report your identity theft there are many places to do it.  However, be prepared to get into a long process as there are many agencies who can/will track down the person or persons responsible.  If you can narrow down the time and sites involved, they can obtain the information necessary to track the intruder.  the more details you can offer the better.

FTC Identity Theft Reporting

FBI Tips Page

All search for "report identity theft" to find your local law enforcement groups.  Here's a hot tip, if the group or person responsible is well known, they may already be involved in other similar acts which improves the chances of them being tracked down.

So, don't stand for having your account hacked or anyone stealing your identity.  Stand up for your rights, report the criminals.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the reblog on this!  I wrote this article after getting hacked and now having to rebuild my following.  Not fun!  Have a great week.
