October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month And My One Year Cancer Free
Friday, October 11, 2013 was my one year cancer free anniversary. I had several follow up medical appointments that day, including blood work and a mammogram.
I took a photo of the banner which hung in the waiting room of the breast center. Many of the employees, technicians and nurses were wearing pink. It was a sight to see.
Having cancer changed me. I feel every day needs to be cancer awareness day. Not just breast cancer, all cancer. Cancer is a silent killer. It attacks us while we are working, playing and sleeping and we often don't know it until it is too late.
I am among the lucky ones. One year cancer-free! All of my lab work and mammogram looks good/healthy. I now graduate from blood work and check-ups every three months to every six months.
I continue to eat healthy and organic. Managing stress does present challenges for me. Stress is not healthy. I strongly believe it causes dis-ease. I've had a few stressful months dealing with sellers attempting to commit lender fraud and listing and selling a home the seller refused to sell. Now I am taking time to re-calibrate and celebrate my one-year cancer free anniversary.
I urge everyone to manage their annual exams. Do not put them off for any reason. Please check in with your loved ones and friends and remind them of the importance of having the screenings. It can make the difference between costing a life and saving a life. Ask them: When was your last mammogram?
Fighting cancer is no fun.
