New York State is taking steps to provide breast cancer early detection and prevention programs for all New York women, including those who don’t yet have insurance. There is no doubt that early detection can save lives, and New Yorkers are encouraged to be proactive about check-ups and screenings, as well as to educate themselves about breast cancer.
Uninsured women should call the NYSDOH Cancer Services Program at 1-866-442-CANCER (2262) or click here to find a free cancer screening in your community.
In July 2012, the Governor signed legislation that was designed to help improve breast cancer detection and prevention by requiring mammography services to inform patients if dense breast tissue is found during an exam.
As someone who is/has been and probably will be again in the future touched by breast cancer as are most of the population, please encourage the women you love to be checked. Also breast cancer doesn't just affect women so encourage the men in your life to be vigilant as well.
