I developed a hematoma doing the laundry!

Most people that own their own homes have washing machines.  The vast majority of these washers still get connected to the water supply with rubber type hoses.  Over time these rubber hoses, due to being under constant pressure, can develop little "hematomas" that eventually will burst---of course only while you are away at work or worse yet---on vacation.  Obviously this can cause hundreds to thousands of dollars worth of damage.  All for the price of about 30 dollars worth of better hoses----stainless steel jacketed type hoses.  Whenever I find these rubber hoses I always recommend that they be upgraded to the stainless-steel type.

This first picture shows a small bulge on the side of the hose that is ready to burst.  (Also note the very tiny leak at the valve stem nut.)hematoma

Hi Charlie,

Very interesting.  I suppose we should go around and make sure we no longer have rubber hose connections.  Thanks.

That is funny, Interesting comparison of the budge in the hose to a Hematoma. At first I was expecting you to say something fell on you and gave you a Hematoma. Good post and very creative.

Charlie, you are so prolific with this blogging that I can't keep up with all of them!  Methinks you are just showing off your camera!   I researched the camera and I fear having to buy batteries all the time and at the wrong time.  Can it not be charged at home?

Hey, another new "word usage" post.  I love it, thanks.  Great point though, I have ALL stainless steel hoses all though my house.  Washing machine, dishwasher supply, all sink supplies, and anywhere else a hose is needed for a constant supply.

P. S.   I also developed a backtoma from trying to see behind my washing machine to see if there was a hematoma.  There was a lotta dust back there!

Leslie, I can just picture everyone leaving their computer and scurrying off to check their hoses!

Sean, at least I didn't get a hematoma "doing" the laundry:)

Barbara, I can see myself settling down to a slower rate of blogging----right now I am just having too much fun.  It is getting a lot harder now that it is getting busier with inspections.  I use rechargeables.  I rotate through 3 sets of 4----four last about a year before they start to not hold a long enough charge for me to get through a whole inspection.  That is a whole lot of pictures. (at least 17,000 pictures per set of four)

David,----not exactly a technically correct use of the word---even if is acurate:)

Barbara, you wouldn't believe the things I see behind there:) sunsmile

A washing machine? That would be great.  I still take my laundry to the river and clean them on the rocks  :-)

Good post and good advice!

Good post Charles. After seeing this on a few inspections of my own, I decided to upgrade to the SS hoses.

Charlie,

You ever seen these, link above. Only a bit more expensive than a plain metal jacket. After a relative had major water damage from a washing machine a couple years ago I went to these at my rentals and my house. They work great so far, no problems and I hoping that in a crisis they will work as shown. Seems good insurance for a low price.

Charlie,

By the way, impressed you know what a hematoma is. I had one removed from a blood vessel in my jaw, after an injury, about 25 years ago.

Guilty...My wife kept reminding me to replace the old hoses and I procrastinated. Well when I was in Colorado this year it happened. So, everyone replace your old hoses tomorrow. Your friendly home inspector....Carl

Carl, thanks to Steve above, we may have to add this upgrade---better than the usual recommendation of upgrading to stainless steel type---looks like a great new item from Watts.

Interestingly enough, I was just thinking about this when reading your last blog on the freezing whatchamacallit.  My hoses burst a couple years ago.  Yes, while I was working in Denver.  Thank goodness someone had stopped by to feed the cat.  I use steel braided hoses now.  :)

Where have you been hiding Melissa?  At last---a good use for cats!sunsmile

Aren't they good for chasing off moles too?  Or rats at least.  Who knows, I don't have him anymore.

May have been a hematoma but it looks like an aneurism to me!  Stainless, or the flood stops are the only way to go.

Melissa, yes I guess they are good for those things too:)

David, nice to see you around.  I was also considering "embolism".
