This blog is not to introduce myself, but to introduce my two furkids, Sumo and Pearl. Sumo is an Akita mix (mixed with what we don't know, but we estimate it must have been something big, like a Great Dane, because he is huge), and Pearl is a purebred Akita.

We adopted Sumo in 2004 from the Humane Society because my DH was about to ship off to Iraq for a year, and I didn't want to spend an entire year alone. I wanted something big, protective, and lovable. Sumo fills all of these criteria--he is at the same time intimidating enough that I don't worry about intruders, and affectionate enough to get me through those lonely days that I spent while my DH was overseas. He is typically Akita in that he is not overly friendly to strangers, and he is fiercely loyal to his family.

We only recently adopted Pearl through the Midwest Akita Rescue Society in July of 2006. She is completely the opposite of Sumo in temperament, sweet to a fault, preferring to lounge around on the couch all day, and if you pet her, she will be your best friend forever.

Sumo's favorite thing in the world (besides his family) is a nice, fresh tennis ball...

Pearl's favorite thing is laying in the middle of the most well-travelled places in the house so that we have to step over her. She snores, too. It's cute, though. :)

Bless you and your family for adopting two beautiful babies.  I wish we lived a little closer so we could let them all play together.  They sound a lot like my two in that one is hyper while the other is content with sleeping.  They lay right in the middle of the floor so you have to step over them as well.  Do yours walk right in front of you and stop?

Welcome aboard.  I look forward to reading more.

Thank you, Brett! We are enjoying being an active part of the rescue community. There are so many wonderful people that I have met through Sumo and Pearl. Of course, I like to tell people that I didn't really rescue Sumo; he rescued me. I hate to think how lonely my life would have been without his companionship for that year while my DH was overseas.

And yes, they do walk right in front of us and stop...they are big enough that we don't exactly "trip" over them, but every once in a while one of them will get a knee in the butt when one of us can't stop fast enough!

Thank you for commenting, Ginger. Sorry it's taken me a few days to get back into it--the weather here has been so awful! I wasn't in the office for two consecutive days due to the snow (see Kim's blog for more information) and now we're playing catch-up.

To answer your question, yes, my hubby is still active, but he's now a recruiter for the Army National Guard. He likes it (he's always liked talking to people about the Army) but it means a lot of late hours, and sometimes he doesn't get to see the family as much as he would like. It is a good job, though, with great benefits, pays for college, and very flexible. We love the Army. (Do I sound like a commercial?)

How adorable! There's nothing that says I'm ready to play more than a dog with a tennis ball in his mouth!

Katie,

I know what you mean about having a dog while you DH is overseas.  I'm an old military wife and I got a Siliver Tip Ausation  Shepard to keep me company.  I got him as a puppy, small fuzzy ball, grew into 150 lbs of loving but protective love.  I used to play hide and seek with him in the parking area of the apartments we lived in at the time.  I remember one time when I had gotten some letters fro DH.  He was in Viet Nam (am I dating myself here?) .  I used to live for those letters.  Anyway I had to go to the bathroom and when I got back Hans had chewed one of the letter with photos enclosed.  I cried all day over that.  I still have the letter and photo with teeth marks in it.  They are our babies and we love them don't we?

Your post was wonderful. Thanks :)
