Our fall season in Westchester brings cooler temperatures, beautiful colors, an abundance of outdoor activities, plus Halloween and holiday decorations.
Plan ahead this season to help ensure that your fall festivities are safe and fire free!
Here are some good safety tips, from our home to yours and for your business, during the festive Fall season:
- Fall decorations, like dried flowers and cornstalks are highly flammable. Keep these and other incendiary items away from those festive candles and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters.
- Keep emergency exits clear of decorations and those fun pumpkins, so nothing blocks escape routes -- just in case...
- Teach children to stay away from open flames. Be sure they know how to "Stop, drop and roll," if their clothing is caught by flames or smoke is too thick to see.
- Always teach your family and business staff to climb downstairs, not UP, in case of a building fire. Flames climb and we need to go down and out to preserve human life! NOTE: That tragic fire this week in Elmsford, where a two year old was in the attic and could not be saved.
- Remember safety first, when choosing a Halloween costume. Consider avoiding billowing fabric that may wave around lighted candle bags on walkways. If you make a costume, try to choose material that won't easily ignite, if it comes into contact with heat or an open flame.
- It is always safest to use a flashlight or battery-operated candle in your pumpkin / jack-o-lanterns. Use extreme caution, if you use real candles. Place lit pumpkins away from anything that can burn, out of pathways and stairs where they can trip someone or tips over and off "the path."
- Flashlights are a safe alternative to candles or torch lights, when decorating walkways and yards.
