Civil War Artifacts Poolesville, Maryland

Members of ActiveRain have been asked to submit a blog that would showcase our state. It would take several years of blogs to properly showcase Maryland. Visitors and residents enjoy the beautiful scenery, the history and the greenery of the state. For this post, I will showcase one place that you may not have visited. Poolesville, Maryland, in Montgomery County was the location of a Civil War camp when the area was occupied by Union troops.

The history of Montgomery County may be found in unexpected places.  After viewing the one room that housed the general merchandise store of John Poole, Jr. in the John Poole House, visitors find a second display in the real room expansion of the log cabin.  Civil War artifacts remind us of the military activity that took place in the Poolesville area during those war years.  Use the link to Heritage Montgomery for more of the Civil War history in Montgomery County, Maryland.

The John Poole House and General Store is the oldest structure in the community and original one room log cabin dates back to 1793.  It served as a home, general store and trading post.  The structure was enlarged several times and also served as the first post office, from 1810, in the community.

The John Poole house is located at 19923 Fisher Avenue, Poolesville, MD 20837 and now serves as an interpretive museum and gift show.  The room behind the merchandise store houses a display of Civil War Artifacts.

Dolores and I visited Poolesville during the 15th Annual Montgomery County Heritage Days weekend, presented by Heritage Montgomery.  The annual Heritage Days weekend is designed to develop tourism while protecting and promoting the cultural, historical and natural resources of Montgomery County.

Great artifacts on a war that should have never happened. It was all about the MONEY, just like the war of 1812, Spanish American War, WW1 and WW2 etc.etc. We die and they spend.  I am a history buff and named my company The Homestead Act Realty in honor of ALL the men who sacrificed everything. Super pictures and thank you.

Hi Roy, this is a very nice post. As a west coast girl who grew up in Alaska, the thing that amazes me the most about visiting the East Coast ( and Maryland) is the history. It's amazing. I love visiting the spots that I've read about in history books.

Hi Roy, very cool stuff.  I am kind of a history buff and have been to most of the major battlefields in the civil, war when I was young.  Gettysburgh, Antietam, The Wilderness, Bull Run, etc.  I am sure I would thoroughly enjoy the John Poole house.
