Little critters*big mess

Good morning everyone-Early in the year we got a lot of rain and when there were a lot of areas of the ground that were very soft I just thought it was the ground being saturated from all the rain. As the summer wore on I began to see several areas of grass furrowed up like something was under the ground burrowing. I would step on the furrowed up and then a day later or less I would find them somewhere else.  I never saw holes coming out of the ground for something coming above ground. I didn't know what it was.

When living in NY my kitty Lindsey when younger was very much a hunter and she would bring me her little trophies to the front steps. There were mice and what I knew as meadow moles. Both very small.  At Mom's place in the country when the snow would melt I would see all they little tunnels where they had been under the snow and it was quite a mess.

When I saw all these furrows in the yard they were quite high and large and all over the 1/2 acre yard. I never dreamed it was a mole. A friend of mine who has lived here a long time told me that is what they were. Still in my mind I was thinking about this little rodent no bigger than a mouse so I dismissed the possibility.

The first weekend in October we had a visit from my brother and sister in law and when I was talking to them about it they said that is what they were.  So when each day would go by and I would see more and furrows in the grass even though I had stepped on them shortly before that.

When I would mow the lawn with the riding lawn mower the mower would chew all the furrows up and so there was no grass just these areas with dirt all over. What a mess. So I decided to google how to get rid of moles.  Imagine my surprise when I saw this picture. A whole lot BIGGER than the meadow moles that I was used to seeing.

The saying they have a face only a mother could love comes to mind and look at those feet. Holy crap! Now the article I read about how to get rid of them said they are a formidable enemy that can dig 18' in an hour. Now one would think that all these furrows there were LOTS of these critters running around making this mess but the article stated as did my brother that most likely it was only one or two of them making this mess. I learned in the articles they are unsocial critters that don't like to share spaces with their kind.

There is a number of different methods for getting rid of them but they say a trap is the best way. I haven't done anything yet. I also read that they like moist soil so between the large amt of rain we had this spring coupled with my watering is probably why I now have this problem. Who know such a little critter could make such a BIG mess. It also stated that they can eat up to 45-50# of worms and insects annually. WOW! Yet they still only weighing about 5 oz.

Robert-I agree with you though, I heard the traps were the most effective way to get rid of them

We have a mole or two in our yard, and have been told that a man in town will get rid of them. I've got to call him, but may wait til Spring.

Holy Mole! What a critter Sharon. I take care of my parents. Some critters burrowed through the space under the three steps going to the front door of their house. They called animal control and got a pest expert to come out. He installed a trap right by the spot. Dad asked me to install a light bulb in the light outside by the front door. That is where the trap is. I went over there and an Opossum was in the trap and hissed at me.

They got him out and took him away.

This may be the first time I have ever actually seen a whole mole.  I usually get the bits that our outdoor kitty leaves us.

Sharon,

We had moles in Napa on the 3 unplanted acres.  Our Lola cat used to catch them and also used the holes as her luxury rest rooms (no need to dig).  We did not care about those because we kept that part as a field, and it was mowed annually for fire reasons.  Here they are also prevalent.  At our former home, we wrapped new plant root systems with cages prior to planting them.  We also do that with lawns, lay a metal barrier, too small to make a tunnel through, and then lay the sod.  In LA, we used to use the gassing bombs, and that would send them next door...It is like a Bill Murray show...the metal wires work best, and they do go to the neighbors then. LOL A

Rebecca-I think they have that around here as well. I have seen ads for rodent control.

Noah-Possums are nasty looking critters. Not one I would want around or run into in the dark. Glad you got your taken care of

Chris Ann-Seeing this pic was my first time seeing them as well. I haven't seen it or them here either just their furrows all over the yard.

Alexandra-I would love to send them to the neighbors. Especially the one with the hound that barks just about daily. I couldn't put the wire down because it is already a lawn and not sod.  Hopefully they just eat insects and leave my trees and other plants alone. I haven'y noticed any damaged but there is one plant where there is a lot of activity.

Sharon, We don't have full size moles, we have voles and shrews, but they still totally mess up our yard and flower gardens.  Not fans of those burrowers!

Liz and Bill-I am not a fan of them either or any rodent for that matter, While not as bad as them coming in the house I still don't like that they are in the yard making such a mess.

Sharon-I hope so too. It is such a mess and everytime I stepped on them to flatten back down they dig them up again. I did read that the ones that are active is where you should put the trap and you could tell they were by them digging back where you flattened them.

Sharon, I know I'm in the dissenting ranks, but I think they're oddly adorable. (and check out those nails!) Our cat does keep these away. We have them regularly here. There are big plastic containers over some of the holes...not sure how that works, but there is one yard down the way that has them, and it has helped. (Buckets, with really tough hard plastic is what they use).

Good luck, missy!

Yikes! Hey are a pest for sure and can wreak havoc! We have a good sized ground hog tearing up the garden right now where the carrots, beets and turnips are planted but we plan on thwarting his efforts by pulling everything in hopes that he/she goes somewhere else. *Crossing my fingers!*

Sharon - the part about Lyndsey and the little trophies cracked me up. We had a cat like that when we were first married and every morning when we opened the back door, there were 3 or 4 little trophies all lined up on the doorstep. Craig had to deal with them.

Toni-Lindsey was a wonderful hunter and those trophies she brought me were just part of having a kitty who went outdoors. I have heard they do that because they are proud of their capture and are bringing it to us to see much like a kid does when they have done good.

Gayle-Somehow I missed your comment. Sorry about that, Interesting idea. Not sure how it would work but it is worth checking out. They are all over the yard. Hard to believe it might only be one or two, those feet are huge. Gary also thought they are beautiful so you aren't alone,

Christine-I don't think I ever had one in my pool filter but had frogs before

If you want to get rid of the moles, try getting rid of the grub worms that they love to eat! :)
