Los Angeles 411: Los Angeles Central Library, Los Angeles

When you typically think of a library adjectives such as old, stale, and bland may come to mind; not so at the Los Angeles Central Library where you can expect to gape at the beauty that frames the knowledge within and marvel at the artwork with brilliance that beams from the inside out. A historical building opened in 1926, The Los Angeles Central Library, has earned its spot on the National Register of Historical places and stands proud as distinctive icon on the skyline with its Egyptian-inspired architecture that at its apex extends a hand holding a torch of knowledge.

Los Angeles Central Library

Inside the library, you will find that walking around the premises will feel like touring a museum-- even to the point of warranting the docents who provide tours. Here is a list highlighting the library's artwork:

Main Lobby Ceiling Painting

Designed and painted by Renee Petropoulos, the ceiling in the main lobby instantly captivates your attention and draws you into it's bright colors and bold shapes, creating a three-dimensional illusion that keeps your eyes fixed on its vortex. Featuring the names of contemporary writers, the 36 x 36 foot ceiling sets expectations high and generates a sense of wonder about what other treasures await within the halls.

Chandeliers in the Bradley Wing

“I envisioned the chandeliers’ function in the Library as a heart to the overall visual, architectural, practical and spiritual functions of the building”-- Therman Statom.

Atrium Lanterns

Located at each escalator landing in the Bradley atrium, hang thirteen-and-one-half-foot-tall lanterns; together the lanterns comprise Anne Preston's art project titled “Illumination”, which highlights the enlightening power of books.

Ivanhoe Frieze in International Languages Department
Created by Julian E. Garnsey and A.W. Parsons, this series of paintings depicts scenes from Sir Walter Scott’s story of “Ivanhoe” and the days of romance and chivalry.

Of course there is much more to learn about the art described above and there are also are many more fascinating pieces of art and architecture to appreciate at the Los Angeles Central Library, but you'll have to visit to learn more about them all. The Los Angeles Central Library is located at: 630 W. 5th Street Los Angeles, CA 90071.
