Do you have an old fridge hanging around in your garage making your energy bills higher? Now you can get rid of it for FREE! Plus you'll earn $30 for doing it!  How's that sound?

If you have been hanging onto your old inefficient refrigerator for your beverage stash in the garage or basement, Duke Energy is now offering an easy way for you to get $30 out of it, have them pick it up at no cost and free up some space. The offer also includes old freezers.

Refrigerators and freezers purchased before 1993 can consume two to three times more energy than newer models, so replacing them with ENERGY STAR® models can save you about $150 per year in energy bills.

Duke Energy is partnering with JACO Environmental, one of the largest appliance recyclers in the United States. About 95 percent of the old appliance gets recycled, reusing insulation, oil, metal, plastic, mercury and other things and keeping ozone-destroying gases from the foam insulation and other toxins out of the landfill.

JACO works with utilities in 26 states, recycling over 400,000 appliances yearly. They are totally deconstructed when they arrive at a JACO recycling center, and most of the components are recycled, with what's left being disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

The program is fairly new, is being evaluated through compiled program data and customer feedback, and may be expanded to include other appliances in the future. The goal is to get inefficient appliances off the grid and save energy use.
