1894 – Domenico Melegatti obtains a patent for producing pandoro commercially. Pandoro (also known as Pan d'oro or “golden bread”) is a dessert created in Verona, Italy. It’s traditionally served with gelato in the center. (It is similar to Panettone, another Italian confection, which is from Milan, Italy, and enjoyed annually at Christmastime.)
1938 – Orson Welles broadcasts his radio play of H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds. Despite multiple announcements that the broadcast is “not real”, many listeners panic, fearing the planet Earth is literally under attack by aliens. The notorious event made Orson Welles a household name.
1942 – Lt. Tony Fasson, Able Seaman Colin Grazier and canteen assistant Tommy Brown from HMS Petard board the U-559, retrieving material which would help lead to cracking the German Enigma code.
1945 – Baseball great Jackie Robinson of the Kansas City Monarchs signs a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers, making him the first athlete to break the baseball color barrier.
1950 – Pope Pius XII witnesses the "Miracle of the Sun" while at the Vatican.
1960 – Michael Woodruff performs the first successful kidney transplant in the United Kingdom at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
1974 – The Rumble in the Jungle boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman takes place in Kinshasa, Zaire. Undefeated world heavyweight champion George Foreman took on former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. (“I float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,” Ali said.)
Ali won by knockout, putting Foreman down (a rare event) just before the end of the eighth round. The Rumble in the Jungle is considered "arguably the greatest sporting event of the 20th century"
1985 – Space Shuttle Challenger lifts off for mission STS-61-A, its final successful mission.
