As I was coming home tonight, I stopped at San Remo Italian Restaurant to pick up something for dinner. In the past, I've always judged a Mexican restaurant by how good their green chili was. In my opinion the same "litmus test" is true for Italian restaurants by trying their Eggplant Parmesan. I ordered a Eggplant Parmesan hot sub fromSan Remo's, and I can honestly say I wasn't at all disappointed.
San Remo is located at 1400 N Harbour City Blvd in Melbourne. That is on the northwest corner of Eau Gallie and US1. San Remo was opened in 1976 by Joe Zarski, a New Jersey native and his wife Angela Amelio, a native of Naples, Italy. The Amelio family had been in the restaurant business previously, so this wasn't Joe and Angela's first rodeo! Joe's son John joined San Remo after college, and this father/son duo now run San Remo's together.
The decor at San Remo is reminiscent of the 1976 opening date. Definitely not a dress up sort of place. BUT, with the soft creamy delicious eggplant that I tasted, I don't really care!
The menu at San Remo is vast. You can build your own pizza, or, choose from more traditional fare including mussels and calamari in the appetizer section. There is a small fresh salad bar with additional salads available. The soup selection includes everything from Pasta e fagioli and minestrone to clam chowder. In the main course department you can try several options like gnocchi, chicken cacciatore, veal scaloppini or a seafood variety over your choice of pasta. San Remo also offers a good vegetarian selection for those that choose not to enjoy meat.
San Remo is open Monday through Saturday (closed Sundays) from 11:00am - 10:00pm. The approval rating of San Remo on Urbanspoon is 83%. I would highly recommend trying the Eggcplant Parmesan!
