Top 5 Halloween Safety Tips

Happy Halloween! I hope you and your children have a wonderful time tonight. Sometimes I miss being able to trick-or-treat. Honestly, I would if my husband would let me. But, I'll save it for when we have children of our own! For this Halloween, though, I want to make sure you and your little ones stay safe. So, I put together a list of the Top 5 Halloween Safety Tips that I think will apply to most of you. Have fun tonight and please stay safe! Watch out for each other!

1. Never Let Your Children Trick-or-Treat Alone on Halloween Night

You would think this goes without saying. However, many people still let their young children out or give them more freedom than they really should. Just use common sense here. Go out with your kids and score some candy yourself if you can!

2. Walk Your Children to the Door of Each Home

It's better to err on the side of caution when it comes to this one. I realize it might be faster for you to let your children run from door to door while you remain on the sidewalk. But, it's just better from a safety standpoint to accompany your kids to each home's door.

3. Consider Bringing a Flashlight or Wearing Reflective Tape

I know your little Superman may not think it's "cool" to have yellow or orange tape across his cape, but it's better to err on the side of caution. You could also go with a flashlight instead too!

4. Do Not Eat Homemade Candy!

Sure, that homemade peanut butter cup may look delicious, but why take a chance? Throw it away and stick with factory-wrapper products.

5. Do Not Let Older Children Out Alone

Your teenager probably doesn't think it's cool to go treak-or-treating with his or her parents. So, if they go out, make sure it's with a group. And let them know about tips 3 and 4, since they are more likely to eat some candy between homes.

Well, there you have it. The Top 5 Halloween Safety Tips. Sure, we could add walking on the sidewalk and looking both ways before crossing the street, but your children know that anyway most likely. These Halloween safety tips just serve as reminders to have fun, but be careful. Is there anything I missed? Does your family or neighborhood do other things? Let me know in the comments below.
