Beware of Wells Fargo Bill Pay Feature

By

If you use Wells Fargo Bill Pay feature, you need to read this ----

I recently had an incident with Wells Fargo with a payment inputted into the Bill Pay, and the payment got to the recipient late.

When I received a notice from my credit card stating I had to pay a late fee, I made an immediate call to Wells Fargo.   She said they would have to open a inquiry and would get back.  She did say she could see I entered my payment in late September, but could not "see" the date I asked for the payment to be made.   (I entered 10/9 with a 1 day delivery date.    My payment was due 10/14.    I asked her how we can see what date we requested the payment to be paid, and there is NONE available for me to see.    I also sent an email through the system asking for a resolution.

I received no less than 5 emails back from "an unknown person" from Wells Fargo "Customer Service" stating I need to be more careful paying my bills and all was done properly on their end.    In NONE of these emails was the date submitted for payment revealed.

Having a LATE PAYMENT is not in my vocabulary and peeves me to the core!   Especially when they sent an email telling me how to pay my bills and how to enter this information "correctly".

BE CAREFUL with Wells Fargo Bill Pay --- I now will do a screen shot every week when I pay my bills for a back up and will seek out an executive here in Denver rather than through the "customer service" obviously run by $8.00 an hour employees!

Hi Joan,

Good information! This is exactly why many don't want to allow auto pays..it's easier to take the time to do it yourself and know it is done right!

Good Morning Joan, unfortunately, it's not only Wells Fargo, if there's any possibe way for them to tag on some fees, they will do so. Whether you mail it or auto pay, I don't think it makes a difference.

Joan, I have had this issue once with my Bank of America pay and was told that the date does not guaranteee it will be paid on that date so ensure you pay earlier!  What why put the date then...so now I pay bills more than a week earlier!

Joan, I have had this happen with Wells Fargo too, and now do screen shots as well. It took some time to get the right person but, the late fee was eventually removed. Completely understand where you're coming from with being peeved to the core. Makes you feel violated!

Joan,

This is a good reminder for people to check to make sure their bills are being paid properly and on time. I just ran into a bad experience with my Municiple Company because of errors on their end.

Ugh, thanks for screenshot tlp. When I make reservations online I print confirmation details. Recently it worked to our advantage as the hotel had wrong date for our arrival. Fortunately the hotel honored our paper copy.

I would escalate this to "executive customer service" so they can address the late fee and potential impact on your credit. I'd also send a screen shot of the account activity showing you made the payment early. That should get some action.

Brian, that would be a great idea, but yesterday just started doing the screen shot for a back up.   Never knew I would ever need this.   I will find an executive to share this experience with here in Denver!

Oh boy, we just had a deposit issue with our Wells Fargo account yesterday - it was a big check too. So glad we got it ironed out...but still. How the heck to do these things happen when we are so careful on our end?  Sorry to hear Joan.

Thanks for the warning. This is a service to avoid. Go up the executive chain until you have satisfaction.

Happy Halloween!

Joan as much as I like beating up on Wells Fargo, this is not limited to them.  I use a local bank, and I had something similar happen.  What happens is that not all transactions are wire transactions.  In some cases, and mortgage payments tend to be one of them, the bank actually cuts a physical check and mails it.  The receiving bank then takes three to four days to process it from the date of receipt.  So in order to not get hit with the late charge the payment needs to be made no later than about 6 days before it is due.

It is rediculous in this day and age that it takes that length of time to process a payment, but they do.  I was lucky the credited me back the late fee, but I was still not happy that I had to even address it.

Joan: It is sad that for many large companies, quality customer service has become a lost art.  I hope you stay on them and get the late fee lifted.

Sounds like a trick to me!  My credit card company gives me 19 days to pay the bill.  That is a far cry from the 30 or 31 I should be given.

Joan, thank you for the heads up.  I had a problem with them years ago when they double deducted a large mortgage payment on a multi-family investment property I had. It caused other payments to bounce and created quite a nightmare as it was a $3,600 payment.  My bank approved both mortgage payments because I had enough of a buffer to cover it, however it caused my tax, utility and contractor paymentss to bounce which made me look bad.  I wanted them to cover the overdraft fees for the other payments and they gave me a very difficult time about it.  I believe it took two weeks to fix it.  The customer service did not handle it well at all in my opinion.

There should be no excuse for this kind of poor service, Joan.  Some one at Wells Fargo needs to take some responsibility.
