I See The Hanging Light, But What About All That Rotted Wood?

Rotted wood can be dangerous in Sacramento, CA

Proper lighting around the exterior of an apartment or home is very important. I got a call to take a look at the lighting near the garbage dumpster of an apartment community; the light was falling off.

In looking at an exterior light that was coming down near a garbage dumpster, I couldn’t help but notice that the wood was severely rotted. The rot had been going on for quite some time with no repairs made to correct the problem.

Sure I could probably get the light to function correctly but the dry rotted wood should also be addressed. Clearly there have been at least two large pieces that have come down with a few more that were unsafe. I think it may be a good idea to either fix the wood members by replacing them, or remove the structure completely before someone gets hurt.

Either way, an experienced general contractor may be the best decision to call for advice in your area.

You may be right Brian, that does seem to be the center of things here.

You are right Kathleen, but I think that many look at the short-term returns. This short-sightedness can lead to greater problems down the road.

Maybe those that are making the decisions aren't around long enough to see the result of there decisions Mike.

I know a few electricians who may have just drove in some longer screws to grab some solid wood and called it good Mike. I'm not that guy!  :)

This is getting very close to that point Debbie. Maybe then the problem will be addressed. :)

Tom - this one is pretty bad... even I could have figured out that the rotted wood was the root cause.  Deferred maintenance/care will always get you in the end.

Tom, to me the sign of a great (vs good) contractor is one who will look beyond the "problem called about" to let us know of the real problem. In some cases this is good to know but does not have to be remedied.  In others, like this, it is important to get the rotten wood out before the light goes back up.

Tom -- The longer you wait, the worse it gets. Just ignoring a situation like this will only result in more expense and possibly someone getting hurt.

Tom -- it seems that rot only gets worse over time.  It looks like it would be the best solution to repair the rotted wood and reinstall the light.

I think we all need to be aware of the best answer for the client Kelly; sometimes that means looking at the bigger picture.

Tear it down immediately. Rotted wood is never a place to rehab any structure. This is what happens with neglect of property.Any structure needs care and maintenance and this structure obviously got neitheer.
