1898 – Cheerleading is started at the University of Minnesota with male cheerleader Johnny Campbell leading the crowd in cheering on the football team.
1920 – In the United States, radio station KDKA of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania begins broadcasting on the air waves as the first commercial radio station. The first KDKA feature story to be broadcast is the result of the 1920 United States presidential election.
1947 – In California, multi-millionaire playboy and plane designer Howard Hughes performs the maiden (and only) flight of the Spruce Goose (AKA H-4 The Hercules). It is the largest fixed-wing aircraft ever built that flew.
1959 – Twenty One, a popular television quiz show is smeared with scandal when long-time successful contestant and professor Charles Van Doren admits to a Congressional committee that program employees gave him both questions and answers in advance.
1960 – Penguin Books is found not guilty of obscenity in the trial of R v Penguin Books Ltd., AKA “the Lady Chatterley's Lover book case”.
1983 – U.S. President Ronald Reagan signs a bill creating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
