Here's a tip (or two) to try to help boost your google rankings
In addition to being our local, beloved "Flooring Girl," Debbie is one of fav guru(esses) on getting "Google juice" or higher rankings. I am reblogging her post because she gives great tips on checking out your competition -- know thy enemy, ala Sun Tzu -- and answering forum and consumer questions. Take know, as always with Debbie G!
We can't all be first on google...and even if we are first for some terms, there are others where we're not. We all want to do better right?
So, first, a general tip. Google your key word term. See who is coming up ahead of you...and see what you can learn from them so you can do better. Why are they ahead of you? Is it because of their title? Content on of the article. Page rank/authority/inbound links? Some of these things we may just have to accept and we can't replicate, or can't replicate easily. But use this as a starting point to learn and see what you can do to improve. (Don't copy and paste, though...obviously).
Second, when there are places that are outranking you, see if there is a way that you can strategically add content and a link back to your site (but not in a spammy way). For example, for me, some of my key blog posts are questions. I was really disappointed when one of my posts slipped in the rankings (it was prob. #3 and then went to #6). I noticed that 2 of the posts ahead of me were from forums where customers are asking questions. I may never be able to outrank them (although I may still try), but if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. So, at the beginning of Sept (when I noticed this), I wrote a comment stating my opinion and placing a link where people could read the full article. Context: This was a question someone asked, and I was providing an answer.
The reason that this is working is that this page is coming up on google searches. It's not some random comment left on some random forum. I'm leveraging a forum/page that is already coming up for my search. I'm leveraging someone else's ranking.
I will still work on getting my ranking up, and hopefully, this stream of traffic will help me in that pursuit. I need to find more places where I can do this, and you may want to try this, too.
Oh, and this is the post I want to rank a bit higher on: Which is better - oil or water based polyurethane? This post has well over 36,000 clicks, so it's not doing so bad. But, still I'd like to do better.
