Anatomy of a real estate deal (part one)

Grace and Jason decided to sell their Keller home. They've lived in it a while and raised their family inside these walls. To make the experience a pleasant one and help them make the transition in their minds from “the home we live in” to “a marketable property for sale” I’ve suggested a two step process.

First: UNDRESS the home of the personal decoration that declares it Grace and Jason's home sweet home.

Next: DRESS the property declaring it's not only available for sale, but ready for someone else to move-in.

I think we can all agree that the purchase and sale of real estate is fraught with emotion. Letting go and moving on for the Seller mixes with the excitement of taking hold and moving in of the Buyer. This week and next we’ll visit with Grace and Jason to get an inside glimpse of the Anatomy of a Real Estate Deal. So... Let’s take a peek!

Grace took one more look at the joyful chaos on her refrigerator, remembering once more the tiny hands that finger painted that sunset, the determination of her daughter as she carefully crayoned the whole family including the pup.  The first hint they’d had of the artist she would become. “No time like the present!” Grace encouraged herself, as she carefully removed the old and faded picture along with the magnet collection from the refrigerator. She silently packed, listening to the sounds coming from the garage where Jason was sorting through many years of accumulated man-cave memories himself.  As she moved on to the cork message board, she realized Kristen, her Realtor, was right! The kitchen really did look so much bigger and amazingly so much cleaner without all the clutter! She was proud of herself and her home and felt better about the process of moving.

Enthusiastically now, she taped the full box, picked up the next one which was labeled “Our Family History in Photos”, and methodically began wrapping and placing all the framed photos inside. “I’m actually enjoying this walk down memory lane!” she exclaimed out loud, hoping Jason might hear her. He didn’t, but she didn’t mind. She felt like the whole family was there with her, in her thoughts as she wrapped each picture, each award, each plaque and tucked them away for safe keeping until she’d take them out in their new home.

When she was done, she returned to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee to enjoy while she waited for Jason to come back in. “Kristen was so right about all of this so far,” she thought as she sipped. “I am looking forward to what she said will come next!” She slipped from her chair to start dinner as she heard Jason’s garage packing wrapping up.

A Realtor should understand just what you are experiencing at this time, and be a source of information and even comfort! This has been your home, your safe haven and the showplace for family photos and special moments that highlight your personality, taste and even your heritage. However, these items will not inspire others to “see” the house as their own home if it's over flowing with items that still say, "Grace and Jason." Decorate so buyers see the house as a home for them -- that's what's key. And since you are going to be moving soon, there’s no time like the present to begin packing!

I never thought about undressing and then dressing a home, but you are so right. I certainly don't see it through your eyes being on the mortgage side, but I hear buyers talking about it all the time. Great post.

Make it a great week!
