The Crescent in Charleston, SC

The Crescent Lifestyle

The Crescent is a quiet haven of elegant homes a few blocks from Folly Road thoroughfare. Most homes are brick construction, the oldest homes having been built in 1934. It is one of the first neighborhoods outside the peninsula with underground utilities, work that began about four years ago and is just being completed.

What is the neighborhood like?

These are large, but not mansion-size homes. Live oaks and magnolias populate spacious front yards and provide cool shaded streets. Most lots border a tidal creek and two lakes. This neighborhood is home to retirees, young professionals and couples with children.

According to a history compiled by the Homeowner's Association the land was part of a working plantation in 1812 owned by Robert G. Simons. The Crescent name comes from the crescent shape of the land, intersected later by the Wappoo Cut bridge. Trees on what is now New Town Lane are part of the avenue of oaks to the original plantation house on Wappoo Creek.

What Is There to See and Do Near The Crescent Neighborhood?

The advantage of living in The Crescent is that the neighborhood is centrally located. It's a quick trip to James Island over the Wappoo Bridge, a lovely 10 minute boat ride over to Charleston Harbor, and a short trip over the Ashley River bridge takes you right into the heart of the historic district of Charleston. For those looking at          West Ashley homes, this will be a great start.

Closer to the neighborhood is Riley Park. Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park is named for Charleston’s long-serving mayor and presides over the banks of the Ashley River and is locally known as “The Joe”. The park is a unique venue in the Charleston area. In addition to summer minor league baseball games, The Joe hosts weddings, corporate picnics, family reunions, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, oyster roasts and more. Inside the park, guests will revel in all that is good – fun, love and Charleston.

Of course Charleston and the surrounding area have played a great role in our nation's history. The area is home to many plantations, museums, and both Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields - all open for tours. You may also visit Charles Towne Landing which was the first permanent European settlement in South Carolina.

What Schools Will the Children Attend?

The public schools for The Crescent are St. Andrews Elementary School, West Ashley Middle School, and West Ashley High School. For a list of public schools in the area, please visit the Charleston County School District website at www.ccsdschools.com/index.php
